I wouldn't say that it's inappropriate in any way. I've done similar acts beforehand, and onward, it can be quite motivating. In my experience, at least.

Copying drawings is one of the best ways of improving, it also helps you in getting a sense of shape and proportions.

Just make sure to credit the original art though.
