Get a good reliable ISP that will get you the speed you want. Then the speed is your computer, the technological(not always geographic) distance to the server, and if the server is stable.
Of course a big part of that is distance. If you really want to, move yourself or the server. One of those choices is easier, but its up to you.
Steam games can be large so having a slow download speed would be a problem when you begin to install them. But for gaming only loading levels and the initial connection might lag. Otherwise I play just as poorly as everyone else and its usually never an issue(depends on the game).

Half-Life 1 (great game on its own and then you can install all the free mods from moddb)
Then consider The Orange Box (you "could" start TF2 as its free-to-play, but you get benefits from owning it). Portal is hilarious.
Thirdly see if the "Valve Complete Pack" catches your interest.
Of course I'm heavily in favor of Valve games.

But try Sanctum. Its a tower defense game AND a FPS in one. Works really well.
Defense Grid is an awesometacular tower defense game.

Well, lastly you don't have to take anybody's word on it. View our profiles for our games lists. The important thing to note is the hours played. That says lots about replayability.

I've seen a lot of other things several times. I guess people don't check anymore. THIS IS A SERIOUS THREAD!

If they're crafty enough I'd like a running total next to each game (assuming they're in ranked order). I'd love to see what can be bought with a certain budget.

I do recall playing with some international people before Altantica came to Steam.
My friend in the UK couldn't even begin the download because "This item is currently unavailable in your region" shows on his screen.
Where can I see the list of regions where the game is available? I certainly thought it had a worldwide playerbase. He's offline now, but I think the only thing could be if he has his steam client thinking he was not in the UK. I'll ask next time I see him.
Any ideas what the problem could be? How to fix it?

As you read this response look just to the right of my name and there is a little down arrow. Easy to miss on first glance but you have it too.
Its a popup menu. You can 1)read all their posts everywhere including their profile page or 2) simply go to their profile page.

Unfortunately unless they post on these discussions at least once you can only find yours on your friend activity/my activity page. The link for this is not actually on your profile page. Even typing the link to look at someone else's entire history doesn't work. Even if you add this as a clickable link on your comments section steam will instead redirect you to your profile page.

Oh, and if you delete a post or report a user it still shows on the history. Unfortunately chatrooms conversations do not show up on this list (if they even record that).

Actually you missed an important distinction.
1 byte = 8 bits
178Kilobytes = 1424Kilobits

Steam tells you in bytes. Your speed test is telling you in bits. Except that wasn't made clear before you began comparing numbers from the two indicators. Both used capital B. One of the capital B's is officially and technically wrong, but typically accepted by the industry.
They're the same rate per second.

If you think the end of the world means the end of life (at least human life) you're making one huge assumption. The aliens will teleport us all aboard their ships and we get off this rock before it gets hit by PlanetX (or a really big Twinkie). I also wouldn't mind seeing a resonance cascade once in a while.

Take that 178KB/sec.
Multiply by 8
get 1424MB/sec

The difference is some companies use the capital B for bits, others use it for bytes (8 times larger than one simple on/off value). 178Kilobytes is your speed.

Steam is downloading at the rate you are experiencing from your speedtest.
As for why its only 1.4Megabits/s, I suppose you went with the cheapest high-speed internet like I did.
If you paid for 10Megabits/s then you have a problem with your cable company.
