Your situation is not normal. Perhaps you installed mods and its detecting them, trying to fix, but failing. From within steam, delete TF2, then exit steam and delete the TF2 folder. Start steam again, downlaod TF2 again (long process). After this you have a clean version and it shouldn't keep validating, ever again. Once is fine unless you notice it misbehaving. If this clean version is still doing that check any other game to see if that also validates every time. If so, time to reinstall steam. If after all that it still does it, your computer has a virus or is extremely misconfigured.

But do get the clothing right. I'd recognize a soldier even without his rocket. Also don't forget the emblem and the helmet else you'd just be a guy with a rocket launcher.

If it had a second counter for non-steam games I wouldn't have a problem with that. But hopefully the game you like gets greenlit onto steam so you don't have to worry about it.

Or you could just hunt down the somewhat new re-released GOLD edition of privateer. (http://privateer.en.softonic.com/) I had some problems with it due to not knowing anthing about the game and playing it cold. I probably also needed a joystick because keyboard and mouse just weren't cutting it.
Also for a non-privateer game thats like Privateer (but without all the religious babble and curses), try Drift: When worlds Collide from Cosmi (http://www.amazon.com/COSMI-Drift-Worlds-Collide-Windows-Pc/dp/B00008HBX7).

On second thought Privateer is based on the Wing Commander universe. Try looking for those games too.

I like lots of chips though. Plain SunChips are alright. But I'll take Sea Salt & Vinegar if its not already stale on the shelf (Ms Vickies, I'm looking at you). I prefer Tim's cascade style.

On a fresh OS install (drive formatted, etc) then steam, then TF2 I sometimes don't see all my info. However, the second time I start TF2 its all there...

So start TF2 a second time. If its still missing info (your inventory, achevements, etc) then its connecting to an account that doesn't have it. Go to the properties of TF2 on the main steam window and look for the "use Steam Cloud" checkbox, make sure its checked and then start again.

I think that AD&D name generator is still floating around the internetz.

And obviously, I went the funny route. Actually this is my Halloween-ified screen name. It will return to normal wackyness after the big day.

I would certainly like to know which machines have been validated by Steam Guard and be able to individually unvalidate machines I've never used, replaced (clean install of windows, etc), or were from... somewhere else(TF2outpost, etc). Adding a nice "log me off of that other machine" button would be nice. No real need to show me system specs unless that can be added cheap.
Oh, and this would be info shown only to myself. Maybe a checkbox on the settings dialog to show/hide this info, but the rest of the world doesn't need an up to the second report of my machine (Its still a Pentium4, 2GB RAM, etc).

Well I think I'm on the right track but... I got this error:

So are these General Directory Server's still running? Will the respond to a ping request? (if so, whats the ip address or hostname?) I don't see mention of any part of the error message on the hldsupdatetool instructions page. And I did switch to the HLServer folder before running it.

I ran this on an administrator command promp on Vista Ultimate 64-bit. Would there be anything extra I need to do?

The end result, no gearbox folder under my dedicated server folder. I'll pick at this some more, but I feel I'm close to getting this working.
