I try REALLY hard to keep my steam rating below 10. That way I know I haven't spent way too much time playing and not enough time job searching. I wish someone would just hire me and remove the curse of too much free time. Also then I could afford to buy games again.

The only ratings that make sense to me for games is if the list of things to be rated (per game) were managed by the game producer(or whoever is responsible for the game) that can be changed base on suggestions (and the game's producer's approval).

Once those are in place I only see it as four choices (per item):
1)Good
2)Bad
3)Indifferent
4)Didn't notice/not relevant to me.

Also important is a count of how many people voted on each feature and a way for the game producers(at least) to see who voted and when. Also allowing people to change their votes would be an important check and balance against releasing a bad update that breaks the game.

The thumbs up/down system is nearly adequate (as it exists in steam) except you can't un-vote if you accidently clicked the button or by some fluke clicked the wrong one. Also only having the thumbs up vote on certain things is kind of silly. Here's an example: Someone buys a game and you thumbs up the notice, then they buy a game you don't like, but your thumbs up is stuck there, now forever bound to the crap game.

The other rating system (also currently in steam) lets them type whatever they want into a recommendation, good or bad. When someone wants to search for a game let them decide if they want to see and or combine both systems at will.

Unfortunately an honest rating system would eliminate all doubt and sales of the "bad" game. The producers of which may need only a few more dollars to make it "good" with the next patch. (Of course research their track record on google and elsewhere first...)

You have TF2. Thats perhaps the easiest way.
Save a replay, have it convert to a movie format youtube can understand and upload it from inside TF2. As long as it shows up and you don't pull the movie down the achievement will eventually notice (takes a few days but under a week. I guess Valve has to "talk" to Youtube even though it just uploaded something)

If you need help converting a replay file into a movie post again but in the TF2 forum/discussion group. One thing they don't really tell you until it fails... is that you need to install Apple Quicktime so TF2 can do the conversion. Try not having it installed and see for yourself.

I was trying to find the official game group (has the wide icon. Only official steam groups use that). Looks like only two fan-built groups, but try your luck, you're among enthusiasts.

You still have icons on your desktop? Time to back them up and move them out of the way.
Unfortunately even Vista and 7 re-shuffle the desktop icons when the screen resolution changes. OP did not mention Windows XP. Linux will do the same, except not usually quite as big of mess afterwards.

Perhaps one or both of your steam friends is sending you a private message.
I would have also suspected you were getting event and announcement popups from the steam groups you have joined, but you don't seem to have any.
