Though there are just a few parts where you have to listen to the exact pitch of musical notes or listen for dings, whistles or steam noises.

You would directly send them the key. Other than you telling them so there isn't a way for them to know if its a legit key and that it hasn't been used yet. One of the reasons I prefer the old gifting mechanism instead of keys.
Also make sure to check if there is a region lock which will prevent them from activating it.

Cape and cane would be cool if it wouldn't make you look stupid in a modern setting

Imagine people attending a cape and cane party.
If everybody looks stupid then nobody is.

If its used for legit science and research purposes its the best thing ever, especially when the team can't physically get together.
