I think Obama has gone too far. And why has he waited to October to say something? Sounds like a calculated political move rather than legit concern.

The other important part of simply having the code AND being able to build it(or your own modifications yourself) is that you can send your suggestions back to the maintainer for them to put directly into the public code. If you're good enough then you can become the 'official' maintainer of the code. This also includes the Linux kernel itself if you feel ready for that, though Linus himself is the perpetual maintainer of the kernel code.
