My bet is you walked into a Pinion server. They have flashplayer advertisements and waiting for x seconds when you join or the server changes level.

OpenAL is required. Find the installer in the game folder. Look for redist. In there you'll find VisualStudioC++ installer, DirectX, and OpenAL.
I'm guessing the first-time setup didn't work right for you.
