If you turn off the simplified list checkbox (in the server browser) you can see all the details. You could probably join US-West or other western hemisphere regions (US-East would probably work best for you), but playing overseas would kill your game unless you have high-speed internet.
Do a quick test to see if you encounter lag on even the single-player offline mode. If you still have lag try optimizing your Windows settings. Otherwise its your internet and perhaps your ISP that put a bandwidth cap on you(A common thing among Canadian ISPs I hear). Still doesn't hurt to optimize Windows.

To be a "coach" on TF2 you must indicate it form the coach icon (bullhorn).
To be coached get to the main menu and click the whistle. Any available coach may reply.

You can choose not to buy items in-game. I found it useful to look at the alchemy paths for the end-weapon I want ( http://wiki.spiralknights.com/List_of_alchemy_paths ) and work my way backwards from it. Everything else can be sold at the auction house or at one of the trading Strangers for far less than it cost to get the item.

Perhaps you just joined a poorly maintained server, or you joined a server very far away (Which coast of Canadia are you on?)

I wonder if there will ever be a "Windows Represent" worthy badge/mascot. Perhaps for those who stuck it out in Win8 in all its majesty. Of course some people wouldn't know majesty if it bit them in the face.
