For example, the letter ب (“b” sound) looks like this:
Alone: ب
At the start of a word: بــ
In the middle: ــبــ
At the end: ــب
So the style may look like cursive to English speakers, but this is just the normal way Arabic works... There are also different fonts, some simple and easy to read, others more decorative and calligraphic.
Upon further reading on the subject this nuance alone. Seems to have held Arabic speakers back significantly. Whereas English has done away with entire letters, and even cursive itself seems to be going out of fashion. All in the name of ever increasing expediency. Arabic it seems has done the exact opposite. One wonders if history will repeat itself.
