I need perspectives on what to do with my messy account
I created this account when I was pretty young (I’m 20 today), with no supervision whatsoever, not knowing how I should treat *something* where money is involved. Everything in this account was gifted or bought with the help of friends or steam cards. I never put my own money on this.

When I acquire games that I’ve played out of steam before (wink), I was so frustrated that the hours of it weren’t accurate, so I inflated them (they opened a notepad file…), I also played with these games a lot, but that’s the painful part: The real hours are mixed with the fake hours. (Not online games obviously.)

There’s a couple of games where I got achievements where I just lied to myself and used stuff like game editors to boost stuff like exp or OP items, thinking that I was just playing normally with just a tiny advantage. The result is platinum trophies that weren’t obtained fairly. (not Terraria and Pizza Tower, thankfully.)

And the most important point for me: I’m finally starting to get money by my work, and plus, the prices of my country/region were adjusted by steam to be affordable. I have barely excuses to not work for my games now. This account has games that I “bought” by lowered prices thanks to friends, steam cards or straight up gifts. It doesn’t feel like these games are mine. Kinda fake.

So, what do you think is the best for me? Creating a whole new account and start from zero? Keep using this one in spite of everything? I don't know what's better, I need more perspectives on this.

Quit gaming and take long hikes in the countryside instead.

Much better for body and soul.

I mean, that greatly depends of how bothered you are about all this.

The first 2 points doesn't matter in my opinion, unless you want to be in some very strict achievement hunting community.

The last one is also whatever, we all are looking for sales and get gifts from friends.

Also keep in mind, that you can use multiple Steam accounts if you want, though in your case I don't think creating a new one is neccessity. :winter2019happydog:
It sounds like what you are really facing is not just a “messy account” but the weight of how you once related to things - to value, to honesty, to yourself - when you were younger and still figuring life out. Steam, like life, is not just about what you own but how you grow with it. Every profile, every hour, every achievement carries the story of who you were at that moment, and nothing stops you from letting that evolve into something real and yours now. You could wipe the slate and start over, or you could transform this very account into a new chapter by owning your past choices and building from them with awareness, gratitude and integrity. There are infinite possibilities ahead, and the worth of your library or your hours will always be less than the worth of the person learning to live with more presence, love and responsibility.

You dont throw away the baby with the bath water.
That's why I never lie... be it to others or to myself.

I don't even understand the problem...

It's not like Steam is charging you for games you don't want to play. And playtimes end up being rubbish anyway.

This is a very powerful message. I think I got it, even if I am still not fully secure. You have convice me to stick out with this, until I forgot about these stuff and related with this account with sincerity as I did before. Thanks.

just buy games and the old ones will become backlog. It just works.

Don't distance yourself from things you did in the past, from your own past self. Accept your own past self (and the things you did back then) as a part of your journey.

Speaking from experience here, a lot of my own past selves (go figure) are cringeworth in retrospective but accepting those is a part of developing a strong menteal health foundation.

I would keep the account and maybe start paying it forward somehow.

Either gift something here and there to the friends that helped you out before, or, if that's not possible anymore, to other people when you notice they have stuff on their wishlist but struggle to buy the stuff themselves.

And you gotta think about the fact that people just change. If you feel that you've been bad in the past, it doesn't mean that you have to be bad in the present.
Just try to be a good person now, and live how it makes you happy. That's all that matters.

I didn't consider gifting games! Thanks for the idea and the words.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Keep using your current account and don't stress about inaccurate time counts or achievements. Play the game for the fun and experience, not for virtual good boy points.
My brain leaked out of my ear reading what you typed.

The only thing I'll say is there's no wrong way to play a game as long as you're enjoying it.

I just gifted a new DLC that came out for a game to someone on my friends list that made almost 2,000 workshop items for that game.

It felt like a nice thing to do for someone that put so much effort into a game and made it better.

The idea that your account is "messy" is only because you are seeing it that way. Literally almost everyone else in the world isn't. You can get rid of those feelings by doing the things you want to do now that puts you in that good place you are wanting to be, and then just let time pass. The idea that your account is messy will fade away with time and the actions you take now will help with that. One day soon you'll forget about all the feelings of having a messy account.
