Hello, can anyone tell me why I can't access mature content. I have set it up in preferences and have a credit card set up on my account but because of the useless and idiotic UK On line safety law it says i need to verify my age hence the credit card and preferences. I am in the UK

Is there a specific reason why you are asking a question that you answer yourself in the post body?
Yes even though I have done all of this "Under the UK Online Safety Act, Valve is required to verify that you are 18 or older before accessing mature sexual content. If you wish to do so, please add a valid UK credit card to your account and afterwards update the Mature Content Preferences." I still cannot view mature games.
A question: Did you use credit card or debit card?
Ah a debit damn that's it isn't it.

Yup. Debit card won't do sadly. You will have to either get a credit card or wait for Valve to add more identification options. Which might happen in Valve time. :LWN_LittleBlackCat:

For UK users, this opt-in process requires age verification. Your UK Steam user account is considered age verified for as long as a valid credit card is stored on the account.

Because of this guy[www.gov.uk] and his friends. The UK government in general.

Online Safety Act 2023 - Legislative process and timetable

In 2021, the draft bill was given pre-legislative scrutiny by a joint committee of Members of the House of Commons and peers from the House of Lords.[45] The 2021 draft bill included within scope any pornographic site which has functionality to allow for user-to-user services, but those which do not have this functionality, or choose to remove it, were not in scope in the draft published by the government.[17] Oliver Dowden, the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, addressed the House of Commons DCMS Select Committee to confirm he would consider a proposal during the pre-legislative scrutiny to extend the scope of the Act to all commercial pornographic websites.[46]

Section 212 of the final Act repeals part 3 of the Digital Economy Act 2017, which required mandatory age verification to access online pornography but was subsequently not enforced by the government.[47] According to the then government, the Act addresses the major concern expressed by campaigners such as the Open Rights Group about the risk to user privacy with the Digital Economy Act's requirement for age verification by creating, on services within scope of the legislation, "A duty to have regard to the importance of... protecting users from unwarranted infringements of privacy, when deciding on, and implementing, safety policies and procedures."[48][49][17] In February 2022, the Digital Economy Minister, Chris Philp, announced that the bill would be amended to bring commercial pornographic websites within its scope.[50]

Civil liberties organisations such as Big Brother Watch and the Open Rights Group criticised the bill for its proposals to restrain the publication of lawful speech that was otherwise deemed harmful, which may amount to censorship or the "silencing of marginalised voices and unpopular views".[21][26][51] As a result, in November 2022, measures intended to require big technology platforms to take down "legal but harmful" materials were replaced with the requirement to provide systems to avoid viewing such content.[8]

In September 2023, during the third reading in the Lords, Lord Parkinson presented a ministerial statement from the government stating that the controversial powers allowing Ofcom to break end-to-end encryption would not be used immediately. This followed statements from several tech firms, including Signal, suggesting they would withdraw from the UK market rather than weaken their encryption. Nevertheless, the provisions pertaining to end-to-end encryption weakening were not removed from the Act and Ofcom can at any time issue notices requiring the breaking of end-to-end encryption technology.

Since these 3 people have been PMs between 2019 and 2024 you have to thank THEM - all Conservatives of course!

Boris Johnson 2019 – 2022 Conservative
Liz Truss 2022 Conservative
Rishi Sunak 2022 – 2024 Conservative

Dont bother. Conservatives never admit that they are responsible for ANYTHING.
Thats why to this day everything that goes wrong in America is Bidens or Obamas fault, never Trumps, even if its laws or projects that got initiated while Trump was President the first time.
Just always say " It was THEM!" and then facts dont matter anymore, especially on the internet.

You are correct of course. My mistake. The current PM is catching the blame from the actions of the previous one. I'm also American and don't entirely understand UK politics.

My point was, it's the UK government's fault.

I'm not a conservative. I've never voted for a conservative in my life. I'm a registered Independent with a lot of Libertarian opinions and a few Socialist opinions.

This is just team red vs team blue nonsense, every government the UK has had in the past few decades has been completely inept and undermined the population regardless of what imaginary party line they say on and none of them have tried to conserve anything. Try to move past the tribalist nonsense, if enough people can do that we actually stand a chance at some positive change.
