❓GOTY 2025❓
It is clear that the expedition will win by a huge margin, but what kind of game with argumentation should there be in 2nd place?

The year is far from over. While it's a good and fun game, I sincerely and absolutely question the prediction that it'll win by a huge margin.

I dont. Will be a sweep. Its the rare combination of being a review and playerbase darling, critics love it and its an "indie" game which gives it the "underdog vs the big publishers" bonus.
Plus its a REALLY good game. I expect a pretty clear sweep at the game awards in December.

Silksong actually has a planned release date this year. Sept 04, 2025. I almost don't believe it; feels like a dream. I'll give my vote to that. 11 years in silent development because "they were just having fun and it takes a long time to develop all their ideas/polish out everything."? How do the kids call it nowadays? They've been cookin.

Silksong is a targeted game for a specific audience - metroidvania fans and fans of the first part

I am 100% sure that the release of slicksong will go unnoticed, like absolutely all metroidvanias, because this genre of games is empty, there is nothing in it

metroid has never been discussed, Kojima has never praised metroid

Sure, that's why other indie games are moving their release dates because of Silksong's release. I guess that's also why I see the game mentioned in various parts of the internet.

I get that you're a fan of Expedition and as I said, it's a good game. But just because you like it, doesn't mean it's GOTY material, mate.

What does Kojima have to do with it?

Not only me.
Most people liked it

Millions listening tracks on YouTube.
Praise from Kojima, who recently hated the games from the festival, because they are all the same.
Cries of streamers and players at the end of Acts 1, 2 and 3, as well as the choice at the end, because the developers stood out and dared to kill the main characters

Will players cry from Metroidvania?

No, there will be no cuts, because there is no plot

Also, the director of "Last of Us" praised the expedition

Let's see which of the directors will praise Hollow Knight :)

if Hollow Knight, which is cheaper and has a fan base, doesn't get at least 300,000 players, it will be a failure.

It may well end up with only 100,000

It's very difficult for a game to take off in 2025, the success of the first part is only due to the lack of competitors
This might surprise you, but plenty of people, including me, don't care one bit what some director says. Such people rarely represent the voice of actual gamers, especially Kojima.

It's a good game, sure. Silksong will be a really good game as well, and I'm not even a fan of metroidvanias.

Funnily enough I've seen quite some remarks about Expedition being succesful because it lacks proper competition, both from indie and AAA. So, I guess the success of that game copies Hollow Knight. :steamhappy:

As was Dark Souls 3, Elden Ring and the genre of "soulslike" itself. Yet something (or a multitude of things) has drawn players outside of that niche.

Nier Automata is an "AAA" game backed by Sqenix that was released in the same year (2017). It sold 9 million copies as of 2025. Hollow Knight has sold 15 million copies. Those are numbers that are hard to attain even within the AAA industry.

Hollow Knight was my entry point into the metroidvania genre. Dark Souls was my entry point into "difficult" games and in many ways, borrowed elements from the metroidvania genre. A "targeted audience" doesn't really prevent an amazing game from being praised. I mean hell, RTS is a dying genre but plenty of people have heard of SC2.

That's the thing indeed. A very good game manages to draw in audience outside the targeted audience. And Hollow Knight did exactly that. Just like Stardew Valley did that for farming sims on PC.

Expedition is a good game, but it is actually the one that mainly draws from the targeted audience.

There does seem to be a revival of RTS games, though in the indie parts. C&C Remaster did help a bit in that.
