settings every game must have
In order to get a positive review, every game must have the following settings:

- Pausing during cutscenes
- Toggle-able setting to mute game in background
- Toggle-able setting to run in background

If it doesn't have these then I leave a negative review no matter what

I'm currently getting ready to leave a bad review for a good game because it lacks these basic settings

Thank you for letting me know not to read your clearly flawed reviews then.

Cool, I leave reviews sometimes too!
You are asking for something that is impossible.

How so?
Because you're probably the only guy in existence who even think about those things, even less want a feature for it.

these features are important for multitasking while gaming

Your first mistake TBH.

If you're not paying attention to what you are playing then you are not "gaming". By pure definition.

gaming is one of multiple tasks being done at the same time

There is a reason why dictionaries exist you know.

If you are doing four different things at the same time you're not gaming. You're multitasking. Ask any "normal" individual and they're going to tell you that when they play a game they actually actively take part on that activity.

Now we all understand why you want an option to pause cutscenes... You don't actually pay enough attention to your game to begin with. And I dare say that the problem don't originate from the rest of the community here.

I wouldn't give negative reviews, solely based on missing options, but they weigh into my overall feel I have towards a game.

I understand what he means. I use gaming not only for gaming, I play games in Japanese, while learning the language. So if I need to pause a cutscene and take a screenshot to put it into google lens, it helps me understand the game better. So any way to pause cutscenes helps and also if you suddenly get a call or something, pausing is a must have. Otherwise I'd have to try and close the game, reopen it, play back towards the cutscene and rewatch it. Not that great.

For me personally, ingame sound, should only play if I got the game open. I always look for an option to turn off the sound when the game is in the background, because sometimes I just want to take a short break and do something different for a few minutes, or watch a video, but I do not want to hear the game the entire time. So I gotta go into windows and mute it there, if the game doesn't support it. Its a few extra steps, that could be avoided.

The last point about freezing or running in the background is also understandable. If a game freezes once it is in the background, you can't for example just let a game run to farm stuff. If you have a game in which you need to wait for stuff to be finished, or just want to skip a cutscenes cuz its boring as hell, but can't be skipped... you could at least do something for as long as the cutscene is playing. But if it freezes, you have no choice but to watch it. Same the other way around. Maybe you want to check something in a wiki, but the ingametime keeps running in the background? To prevent it, you could hit pause or open a menu in most cases, but do you really always think about that? What if you are checking 10 things one after another and gotta swap between pauses and checking ingame multiple times, instead of leaving the game on the right screen and just checking without multiple clicks?

Personally I got even more things I look out for.

I play all my games in windowed mode. If a game doesn't support it, I try different ways to somehow make it work. I want to be able to quickly tab out, but some games still only support fullscreen. Especially in games in which I am learning Japanese from.

I also need controllersettings to be able to invert BOTH axis. I can't play without that. Some games have options to invert, but it only inverts one axis. That is completely pointless and I end up having to fix that by using Steams bigpicture controllersettings. I'd very much prefer that to be in the games themselves.

Language settings should also always be acessable through the ingame options imo.

If a game gives me a good optionsmenu, I will definitely be a lot more happy right from the get go. Doesn't mean they can't still get a positive review though.
These features don't matter to me so I shall continue to review games on my own criteria.

I can easily multitask while playing any game... because I bought a really inexpensive 2nd computer and monitor to do non-gaming stuff on. Especially as it uses a lot less power so I'm not running up a huge electric bill while doing mundane tasks that don't require my gaming rig.

So far, the only games that have gotten a thumb-down "out of the box" from me because of options were games that were incorrectly guessing the language I want to use, and had no option to override their guess...

For the most part, settings do not affect my opinion of a game.

If a game has multiple languages listed on the storepage, you can always change the language from your library when you rightclick the game and change the language from there. I would obviously prefer it to be ingame all the time, but as long as it is possible to change, I wouldn't give it a bad rating for just that.
