Hi. Any chance with helping with the correct answer. I have managed to get a but further by using the beta mac version of steamVR, but now i am getting headset not detected. I have paired the oculus with Steam fine? What am I missing?
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any info that'd be useful. Although SteamVR is available to install on a Mac, and the macos_beta branch is available, streaming to a Quest 3 seems to not be supported...
But to pick apart the first reply:
1. Apple computers are definitely strong enough.
2. Steam works natively on Mac and Linux, not just Windows. In fact, Linux seems to be Valve's chosen platform for growth (with SteamOS and all).
But it's true that with the coming of Apple silicon (M-series chips), Valve didn't bother rewriting their SteamVR code to support Metal over OpenGL. There are likely good reasons for that, like support, documentation, user base, etc - but performance isn't one of them.
The end result is the same though, no VR gaming for Macs unless you install Windows or Linux.
The main reasons being MacOS has a pretty small gamer base and the platform isn't very gamer friendly.
They break compatibility all the time and sunset their platforms much faster than their competitors.
Mix that with a lack of open standard support for things like Vulkan, 3rd party hardware, and the high asking price for hardware that doesn't perform as well as similar priced PCs and you end up with devs and users not wanting to touch it unless Apple pays them directly.
Theres a few crazies here that dont want to hear that but thems the facts and it sucks for everyone involved.
That was true 20 years ago. Certainly not true now.
Bro what? You had more triple A mainstream games coming to mac 20 years ago than you do now. 20 years ago they used OpenGL which is an industry standard not a closed off in house API.
They also were switching to a common CPU arch while using normal GPUs which is the opposite of what Apple is currently doing. On top of that bootcamp was a thing so even without native MacOS support you could still game via Windows which isn't a modern option.
Sure more people are buying M series Macbooks for laptop stuff but almost nobody is buying a Mac with gaming in mind.
Hell, CyberPunk which is a 5 year old game just dropped and performs pretty poorly even at 1080p on very expensive Macs.
Apple needs to get it in gear and they won't so long as Apple fans keep ignoring the fact Apple is the one sailing the ship.
