Recommend some great stand-up comics
I love Bill Burr and Louis C.K., so if you know of some with a similar style of comedy, I'd really appreciate it.

im not mutch familiar with stnad up comedy (my favorite will always be neil hamburger, & he's arguably not even real & was inititally created to mock the format), but ive always adored mitch hedburg...if you havent heard him, he's unique & you'll know quickly whether or not he's up your alley.

Thanks, I know about most of these guys. Kyle Kinane looks like something I could enjoy at work while having lunch. I've been wanting to check out Doug Stanhope for a while, but I'll leave that for home viewing. Mitch Hedberg's nice and unfortunately dead.

Patrice O'neal is my favorite comic of all time. I know he's not typically held in high favor by geeky white folks, because of his complete disregard for political correctness.

However, if you like Bill Burr and Louis C.K, it's no exaggeration to say that they would not be the success they're without ever having met, and learned funny from Patrice. He was widely regarded among other comedians as on of the funniest people ever. As well as, despite the stereotype of being a giant ghetto black man, he was usually one of the smartest men in the room at any given point.

A few quick quotes.

Bill Burr: "Never saw anything funnier than watching somebody meet Patrice for the first time. The most purely funny human being I've ever met."

Jon Stewart after Pat's death: "Sad News. Once again in comedy we lose somebody, who's too funny, too soon."

Dave Attell: "Patrice O. was and is one of the best comics I have ever had the pleasure to watch perform."

Denis Leary: "one of the funniest men who ever walked this earth"

There are hundreds of similar quotes from virtually every living comedian. Comedians even feared Patrice, because being in the same room with him would quickly show whether or not you were a true comic.

As good as his stand-up was though, his true talent laid with off-the-cuff conversation comedy. There are hundreds upon hundreds of hours of air time with him just dominating in rooms full of the greatest comics with overwhelming hilarity.

His appearances on Tough Crowd are indicative of that. Maybe check out the one with him and Bill Burr. [edit2: not the best example actually =/]

I'd suggest though, starting with this fan made tribute put together honoring him. Then go from there.

If you like what you see buy his albums, and help support the family he left behind.

Thanks, axio, for the links. I got some Patrice from the Humble Comedy Bundle, haven't gotten around to him yet.

It has to be Ken Dodd. One of the cleverest comedians.

His humour will skim over the heads of many young folk but for the rest of us... ;)

3 legged chicken >>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHihHjJ4X80

EDIT: No insult to youngsters just Ken Dodd often relies on subtle humour that is culturally dependant and a lot of that culture is a thing of the past. So unless you watch a lot of old films you are not likely to understand it. The 3 legged chicken is not one of those jokes.

EDIT@isometa... Seems you've got me sussed ;) Anyone wanting to see the man who epitomises great British comedy need only look at the other vids. Especially those where he jokes to other commedians. Closest US stand up would be imho William Shatner on a good day. Another Brit great comic would be Les Dawson [especially on teh piano ;) ].

Some people never miss the opportunity to try and put themselves above others. /sophisticated

[Edit] My theory of ever growing prevalence of thee axioms:

Edit2:@Cheesywaffle the comment was more directed at the sophisticated soggy potato of high culture above you. I realized you were just an old fuddy-duddy and thought nothing of it. =)

While I admit to never having heard of Dodd, I enjoy a great many foreign(to me) comics/humorists. Comedy isn't a single definable thing, or limited to one style. It's purely subjective with all styles being valid, and as you mentioned most often requires cultural relevance. Thought, overseas comics do quite will in the states, and vice versa with American comics going overseas. So I think that culture is less and less a dividing factor. I do have my own subjective standards to what good comedy is. None of them; however, have anything to do with the style of comedy.

OP did ask for a certain style though, and just so happens my personal favorite fit the bill.

George Carlin has a distinct pessimistic style that makes him one of my favorites.

"Inside every cynical person, there is a disappointed idealist."
"I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, 'Where's the self-help section?' She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose."
"When Thomas Edison worked late into the night on the electric light, he had to do it by gas lamp or candle. I'm sure it made the work seem that much more urgent."

Bill Cosby's comedy routines are also golden.

"I've got a Ferrari. VROOM! I do 104 from the garage to the front door. "
"Did you ever see the customers in health - food stores? They are pale, skinny people who look half - dead. In a steak house, you see robust, ruddy people. They're dying, of course, but they look terrific."
“Women don't want to hear what you think. Women want to hear what they think - in a deeper voice.”
