Truth be told the word handsome being reserved strictly for men is a bit of a psychology game in and of itself. Strictly speaking the word is just a lesser degree of beauty[webstersdictionary1828.com] that could be applied to men or women. In fact, "handsome wife" is still somewhat common collocate and you still see the phrase "beautiful man" from time to time too.
The fact that these words gained connotations of gendered suggests to me that the purpose was men can never be anything more than handsome, and women could never be anything less elegant than pretty or beautiful.
Don't even get me started on the word cute by the way.. v_v
