What do you mean by "a simple helicopter". What's the difference with an actual helicopter ?
People always ask "why don't we have flying cars yet?"

♥♥♥♥♥, we've had them for over a century. They're called autogyros.

Is a rubber band powered helicopter simple enough?

Yes, rhe germans did during the second world was as "spotters" for their subs.

A gyro of sorts.

still fairly complex though and not something the average person can build at home.

I would consider a gyrocopter a basic helicopter. As basic as you can get anyway.

But its not near as safe as a helicopter though lmao.

interesting

A gyrocopter (or gyroplane) differs from a helicopter primarily in its rotor power source: a helicopter uses an engine-powered main rotor for lift and propulsion, allowing for vertical takeoff, hovering, and maneuverability. In contrast, a gyrocopter has an unpowered rotor that autorotates from the airflow created by a separate engine-driven propeller, requiring a short runway for takeoff and landing. This makes gyrocopters simpler, cheaper to operate, safer in engine failure, and incapable of hovering, while helicopters offer superior vertical flight capabilities for demanding tasks like rescue operations.
