How to be less "Old Internet"?
So, I'm old. I come from old "forum culture" where an insult was met with an insult and people didn't get too butthurt about saying stuff. But Steam is a lot more moderated than that and I'd like to learn to not jump to the worst possible thing to say when someone is acting condescending or cruel. Has anyone gone through this and have any tips? I don't want to get banned nor do I want to be misunderstood.

You just obey old internet rules.
Don't engage trolls and you will be fine 99/100 times.
Lurk and observe how to navigate around the factors that'll get you banned. Serve passive-aggressiveness back with the same energy if you must, but don't use any hard insults, as Steam doesn't like that.

People did get butthurt, there just wasn't moderation, nothing has changed other than the fact that there's moderation.

Read those, and don't violate them. Check back every month or so because they change on a whim.

Unfortunately I tend to take a lot of things personally, I've always had difficulty with that. I got into an argument based on a miscommunication in the Hollow Knight forum today and boy, did it spiral.

That's what I'm saying. People have always gotten upset. Just stop engaging with things that upset you and don't directly insult people if you can't stop yourself from hate clicking.

The number one thing steam moderation hates is personal arguments.

Sure.
Private profiles are always 0.
Whoever uses the word "butthurt," forms part of these demographics:

Younger Adults
Internet Users
Males
Pop Culture Fans

Am I right?

I'm Level 23 and have held this account for 14 years. I set it to private to avoid harassment.

I'm certainly two, maybe three of those things. I'm getting close to middle age though.
