Was Shadow's Inclusion In Sonic Games A Mistake?
Does anyone think it was a mistake for Sega to create Shadow The Hedgehog (the character)? Should Knuckles and/or Metal Sonic have been Sonic's rivals instead? Should Shadow have stayed dead?

Shadow's inclusion of Sonic games wasn't a mistake. It was a brilliant move by Sega to introduce a new character who was edgy, cool and mysterious. Shadow had everything that Sonic lacked: a dark past, a powerful weapon and a badass attitude. He was the perfect foil for Sonic's cheerful, carefree and optimistic personality. Shadow added depth, drama and diversity to the Sonic franchise, and made the games more appealing to a wider audience. He also had some of the most memorable moments in the series, such as his epic showdown with Sonic in Sonic Adventure 2, his heroic sacrifice in Sonic Heroes, and his own spin-off game where he could choose his own path. Shadow is not a mistake. He is a legend.
He was great in SA2, he had something good going in Heroes but that was underdeveloped, his own game did the most damage to him but had some nice ideas, '06 was arguably peak Shadow, his game appearances have been negligible since '06, Prime season 1 didn't really use him much and we'll have to wait until season 2 to see him properly, the third movie has yet to come out but I have decently high hopes.

I don't think he's a mistake, just woefully mishandled by SEGA.

To me the most out of place character is rogue. I know why shes there, she's a fan favorite for reasons. But still its like "Why are you here?"

Most Sonic things are a mistake, but Shadow the Hedgehog was a great game.

Yeah, pretty much what I was going to say. SA2 Shadow was a little cringe but the writing was aware of it and brought him around in an interesting and satisfying way at the end. So overall, it worked. But after that, it's like they forgot he had a redemption arc at took him the other direction instead.

Shadow and Knuckles aren't Sonic's rivals, and arguably never really were. Metal Sonic is the closest Sonic ever got to having a proper rival.

Knuckles stopped being his rival when Sonic 3 concluded, and he didn't care about Sonic outside of him being in the way. He did not have a personal beef with Sonic, he did not hold a grudge against Sonic specifically. Sonic was just an obstacle to him, nothing more. That's not a rivalry.

Shadow never really was a rival, even for SA2 he didn't care about Sonic outside of him being in his way. He never had a beef with Sonic, Sonic was just "the guy who keeps getting in my way" and nothing more than that. The whole "proving his superiority over Sonic" was only relevant for a fraction of SA2 and afterwards is the result of non-canon writings through the likes of Archie or Boom. That's not relevant, that's just a result of the writers not knowing how to write Shadow properly.

As for his existence, Shadow still has a reason to be around. Hell he's half the cause for some of the later games. He's the one that gave Mephiles a physical body in 06, he's the reason Infinite went power-crazy in Forces and pushed him to teaming up with Eggman. He had to stick around, SA2, Heroes, Shadow (game), and 06 focused more on building Shadow's character than Sonic himself got. Other than Sonic, Shadow was the spotlight for 4 mainline games in a row. He's the only character who actually has a proper character arc that spans multiple games.

Sonic's rival was always scourge his green anti self.

But i doubt we'll ever seen him in a game. As he's from archie comics

Scourge was such a good character once Ian was allowed to write him. We are absolutely never seeing him again since he's part of the cast that Penders managed to take ownership over from Sega, so he had to be wiped from the timeline during the second reboot.

Scourge was the perfect rival/counterpart to Sonic. He's a perfect example of Sonic letting his own ego get to his head, and if he realized just how powerful he is. I still believe Scourge can easily take Sonic in a 1v1, every time he lost back in Archie was because Sonic had to have outside assistance (and even that wasn't enough, considering Scourge was able to take on Sonic and Shadow simultaneously during his first outing after gaining his power boost).

God I miss Scourge. So much. Please come back. F*ck you Penders.

Yes it felt like a clone and lazy concept. Also can't fully appreciate the super saiyan look sonic.
Hard to accept Axl in megaman too.
Just let the iconic characters fly, why the need to add so many silly ones. : x
