Prince ain't a coward, and as he said: "From where I'm from, we face our opponents, and if our opponent is unarmed, we offer them a sword!"
If it is not someone you know then just walk away.
Oh also for anyone who actually will step in, remember to call the police about it immediately. There's a doctrine, though I can't remember the name of it, where the first person who calls in about an event is treated as the victim party unless there's overwhelming evidence to the contrary and if you do not call in that is used as evidence that you had malicious intent. You should call in immediately any time you get in a fight or have to defend yourself. Contrary to what you would assume, criminals and aggressors always call in when someone fights back (though naturally they lie and try to paint themselves as the victims). IF you don't cover yourself you go to prison.
Without underpinning knowledge of both individuals and the dynamics of the relationship your intervention could cause more later harm than good.
For instance a guy trying it on first time with a girl he sees on a night out is different to them being a couple.
Im not going to get into it but you roll the dice on intervention where the situation isn't blatantly obvious. Better to inform the public services and let them intervene when your in a grey area.
Pretty much this, with the actual justice system if you give the assaulter a good punch that send him to sleep, depending the origins of the assaulter and yours you will likely be the one getting charged.

Don't have the courage or skill to be a hero, but a phone call is not much of a hassle.
Depedning what was going on, first part may be making a show of 'hi so great to see you again! ' to the woman
To a simple' hi, i am lost, to break the situation '
or a ' That's enough of that, nobody wants to see it ' and stand between the two.
*The initial part is what gives the options for further interaction. If you go in heavy handed then that is likely the only options you will have.
