You have to have a Good Old Games account. Then after that go to gog.com/redeem.

Then you can’t use the code.

You should. Games on GOG are DRM-free, meaning you can download offline installers from their site and keep it somewhere on your drive. The biggest difference between Steam and GOG is that the latter lets you keep the games you've paid for.

GOG at one point did have a game-sharing feature where if you owned it on platform and linked your account(s), it would give you the same game on GOG for free. That was years ago though and they ceased that program.

You can still link your Steam, Ubisoft, XBox, PlayStation etc. accounts to GOG, but they're treated as limited game installers: it prompts the programs for the game data info and to launch / install them. The latter doesn't work with the console platforms though.

Good luck with the GOG platform! You'll have a better experience with your games there compared to Steam.

Gog.com isn't really a platform per se. You don't have to be online to play their games. You download it and can even add it to the steam library from there. You won't get steam achieves, but you can launch it from your steam library after you download it from gog.com You own the games forever on gog.com. Steam you just rent for life or until they change ToS or get taken over.

The caveat's that the game had to also be available on the GOG platform. Let's say the program was still around, if you owned Stellar Blade digitally on PlayStation 5 or Steam, it wouldn't grant you access to the GOG version because they don't own / distribute it.
