Best 4X game?

Age of Wonders. 1990 Originals up to the most recent 3.

4 and Planetfall just miss the mark for some reason.

I could never get into Civ.

Have you played 4 recently? I would have agreed with you for the first year post release. Then the updates rolled out and it's really changed the game quite a bit.

I didn't like Age of Wonders 4 and that's the only I played.

Civ is the best. Try 5.

Use Vox Populi mod for best results.
I've recently played Civ 3, 4, 5, and 6 to determine which of those is best. My verdict is 5.

It has the best balance between grand strategy and city micro management I think.
It also has the best style and music.

I think the hex tiles with better to, and the combat works a lot better and requires some thought.
