If you want creature building then check out the 31 flavors(there's more than one obviously) different S.P.O.R.E. titles and dlc.

Ni no kuni is a lot like that. Also it has animation and music done by Studio Ghibli which is unsurprisingly gorgeous

SMT/Persona inspired and came out before Pokemon so this is actually an even more correct answer.

Cobblemon for Minecraft is pretty decent. It basically imports the battle system and spawns lots of Pokemon as mobs. So you end up seeing them in the world. Not all Pokemon, but you can't expect them all to be modeled and modded in so soon.

I had someone recommend the "Siralim" and "Monster Sanctuary" games recently. Desrbied as Pokemon but with more creatures. Never tried myself, been waiting for a good sale and to finish off a few other games.
