Dungeons Are Cruel
Title. Aye, some kingdoms may treat lawbreakers with mercy — keeping them in guarded halls, offering bread, prayer, and even penance. But many lords toss them into damp dungeons, chained to stone, left in filth and darkness like cursed souls.

And the jailers? They’re often cruel, or bought by coin. A man who speaks to them, revealing the trades or misdeeds of fellow prisoners, becomes a marked one — spat on, beaten, perhaps worse when the torches dim.

Why do we not forge a better way? A just punishment, yes, but with dignity. Healing, not only suffering. For are we not all sinners in the eyes of God?

but there's so much cool loot lying around! just grab your wooden sword and off you go.
Interesting side note, the dungeon was not normally underground but at the top of a tower. Harder to dig your way out when you're 50-100 feet off the ground.
the dungeons of fear & hunger were created for this purpose. in this place so close to the old gods, what could one have expected but death and suffering?

but the newly born god of fear & hunger ushered in the "cruel age", to give humanity the strength to fight against their fears, to overcome their sorrows.

After considerable lobbying from dungeon master unions and executioner guilds they finally stopped that awful mess. Now at least they're underground. Less walking, less screaming. It's a win win.
