Tomonobu Itagaki 1967-2025

He might be thought of as a dirty old man for his notorious (but revolutionary) use of 'bounce physics,' but he really understood proper game mechanics and difficulty curve, refusing to coddle players like most modern games do.

Ninja Gaiden (along with Onimusha and Devil May Cry) were Souls-like before souls games were a thing.

If anyone hasn't yet played the Ninja Gaiden series, ignore the people who say only the Black edition on xbox is any good.

The Master Collection on Steam, with the Sigma Black mods to restore cut or altered content is a perfectly acceptable way to experience them.

The recent remaster of NG2 is okay, but it still cut some parts that shouldn't have been.
holy crap that sucks so hard. i was never huge on the DOA or ninja gaiden series, but his influence cannot be denied. always loved the character designs of both series, guy really loved designing buxom ladies.

only 58 too
Dead Or Alive sure has pretty girls
In Who Framed Roger Rabbit they move in reverse
"My life was a continuous battle. I kept winning."

That line goes so hard and is a perfect mindset for his Ninja Gaiden games, rip you crazy game director.

itagaki had a lot of funny quotes, guy had an attitude just like hideki kamiya

"But gamers who think that Ninja Gaiden is too hard are losers - there are always winners and losers - just fight your best fight!" - Tomonobu Itagaki

"At first it was easier, but when the testers said it was too difficult, I made it even more difficult."

He may appear like an ass often, but I'd lie if these aren't super inspiring lines. Keep pushing limits and keep winning.
Now I'm wishing I had the cash for DMC.

He wasn't involved with it, it was Kamiya for DMC 1 and Itsuno took over after 2.

Itsuno left Capcom though.
"So it goes."

tbh i love when japanese devs have attitudes like itagaki and kamiya because its so rare over there, most of them are so polite and reserved.

so going on hideki kamiyas twitter and seeing him say "YOU ARE BLOCKED INSECT" is beyond hilarious.
Maybe it's something with the newest version, but I can't get the new release of the Sigma Black mod to work on the Steam Deck.

But on Windows, it is the definitive way to play. Input is as snappy as it was on PS3, and it restores Ayane's voiceovers, along with a ton of other visual tweaks and stuff.

And while it's a bit boring as far as boss fights go, the giant Buddha statue at the start of NG2 is a really cool spectacle. It should not have been removed from the newer remaster. That actually bothers me a bit more than replacing blood with purple smoke.

No statue of liberty either.

There never will be a true definitive version of 2 unfortunately.

May he rest in peace :steamsad: he was one of the best game directors in that genre of games, to this day i've yet to see a game like the old Ninja Gaidens.
