Why is split-screen removed from PC games?
Is there a reason for this? Borderlands, Left 4 Dead and Resident Evil 5 are the biggies I can think of, where the consoles have split-screen but the developers actually go the extra mile to have that functionality removed from the PC ports. Just looked at Lord of the Rings: War In The North and saw split-screen gameplay footage... of course it's not available on the PC though. It can't be because of performance, right?

Even if it's just because "couch coop" is less popular on PC, wouldn't it be more work to take existing functionality out of a game than to just leave it?

I realize it's a better question for the developers themselves, but just for discussion purposes I wanted to ask here. Why is this accepted practice? Especially with the PC slowly working it's way into the living room...

It would be insane to have the pc go spiltscreen. Consoles were meant for that because the tv's are big. And there isn't enough buttons on computer for 2-4 people to huddle around and play on, that would be ridiculous.

I think it stems from the fact that PC gamers have always used a full screen view to play as well as only one person using a mouse and keyboard at one time. The fact that PCs can be set up anywhere and a LAN formed for people to play together also negates the need to have split screen where two people can play on the same screen.

PC doesn't need it.

TV's weren't always big, and I've played through entire games split-screen with friends on my PC. Resident Evil 6 being the most recent success story. Just require the use of controllers? Seeing as how the games are already built on console to require that, I'm not sure why it's a better solution to axe the content altogether.

Not to mention there's really nothing stopping a modern home entertainment setup from having a PC and HDTV connected.

Trying to game multiplayer via LAN with multiple desktop PC's sounds like a major inconvenience outside of anywhere but a college dorm. How it would "replace" split-screen is beyond me.

To say the PC doesn't need something because you wouldn't use it is like saying a game doesn't need to exist because you don't like it. I want it, I know people ask about split-screen in these games that don't support it. People have made great efforts to mod split-screen into Borderlands, Left 4 Dead and Resident Evil 5 with varying degree's of success.

Of course they weren't always big, but it's also something that pc wouldn't ever need split-screen. Lan is much easier and less eye-boggeling. Consoles were made partialy for the sake of people wanting to play together.

How is LAN much easier? Do you make a habit of forcing your friends to drag their $1000+ desktop PC's over to your house?

You see, that sort of thinking is how the Xbox One came to be.

Why even suggest LAN as a viable option then? No less suggest it's a better alternative to split-screen. I have friends who like games but don't have gaming PC's.

Not sure where you're going with this...

Then use consoles! Why consoles are an alternative to pc because the people who then don't have one!
i think rendering twice as many high end graphics would break most computers :tank:

But I have a PC... why should I have to buy another $200-400 piece of hardware to play the same games with functionality removed from the PC port for no reason? Why is this considered acceptable?

Pc, console. Weren't supposed to play with eachother! Two different gameplay styles, whole bunch different company's! And if your friends don't have something you don't have or vice versa, that's no reason to ask why something isn't something isn't. Changing pc's to having spit screen is pretty much making them consoles! Plus, steam box is already doing that
