What's an 85% score game you can't put down?
Tell me the hidden gems with unique and possibly frustrating mechanics that can be overlooked.

I am going to list a few of my own, but some of them had higher scores than I realized.

(It's actually a seriously hard game if you up the difficulty, I had people rage qutting when I maxed out the enemies)

War Thunder is surprisingly low, but a great game.

Delta V. It's tough for new people to get into because of some of the complex mechanics, but it's amazing once you begin to understand how everything works.

Wasteland 3 got delisted because of a Unity security vulnerability. I don't know how many other games have this issue, but it's unviewable to even me and I own it. I could only tell from the URL

That does look awesome! Definitely wish listing it

The gameplay in Dungeon Munchies is really simple, but the story, jokes and characters are excellent. It’s a real emotional rollercoaster of an experience all up.

i was really excited for this one because the bleak horror atmosphere and sense of helplessness looked amazing, but some of the reviews just make it seem immensely unfun to play. it is still early access though, so it has some time to clean up the issues. i am still following its development though, the atmosphere/art alone is almost enough to make it get it even if the game is pish

Most of the reviews are just whiners. It's not nearly as difficult or tedious as they try to make it sound. It does take a lot of time and patience to get established in the early game, but once you know how things work it becomes a lot more fun.

tbh i feel almost like the game SHOULD be a bit tedious because thats sort of what it seems like they were going for. you are a weak, starving little scrap gatherer in an apocalyptic hellscape annihilated by giant eldritch robot monsters. suffering should be part of the experience, at least in some way.

it is good to hear that many of the complaints are just whinging. i will definitely get it eventually regardless, i have been following its development for quite some time. it seems like one of those niche games that is for a very specific crowd and that did not resonate with some, but it looks like a game i would personally enjoy.

Starcrack Valley

Steam, GOG, Switch.

I dunno if this qualifies, but my most played game on Steam.

i thought of a few more niche 80ish% score games

https://store.steampowered.com/app/304650/SUNLESS_SEA/
https://store.steampowered.com/app/596970/Sunless_Skies_Sovereign_Edition/

these are first and foremost, story games. the main draw of them is the really sublime, eccentric writing and setting. so if you do not enjoy reading these titles are probably not for you.

the issues though are actually in the action side of the gameplay. its a resource management sim (think darkest dungeon) where you constantly need to worry about food, fuel, and your crews sanity mixed with a ship combat game. this is fine concept, but it kind of conflicts with the storytelling aspect because it makes it difficult (and very dangerous) to explore too far for too long.

there are also some rougelite elements, where you keep some things if you perish but you lose the majority of what you had. with each death it becomes more simple to reobtain these things, but its still a bit obnoxious because a run in these games can last for dozens of hours. and you will die pretty often, the games are meant to be tough.

any issues i had with the gameplay personally though are negligible because the writing, characters and worlds are amazing to explore.
:steamthis: Excited for Forever Winter once its had more time in the Oven.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/784080/MechWarrior_5_Mercenaries/

I was never a battletech guy but this game has hooked me bad.

The base game on its own is OK, but once you add DLC and mods (oh my god the mods) it turns it almost into a mount and blade with giant mechs that you can modify with all kinds of equipment and weapons to your hearts content.

And the devs keep updating and making DLC for it.

Highly recommend on a sale. It goes for quite cheap at this point.

A lot of people don't like the water system because it forces you to put down priorities over loot. I actually thought that was a genius idea, because you can replay the game instead of just walking into an old save and being disoriented. Of course it would benefit a lot from more rogue like elements making every play through different with different styles and goals, hopefully the developers will implement more as time goes on.
