Long enough. The issue is the character is too slow and clunky, and very frustrating. They need auto sprint.

Only within certain distance. Farther than that the horse won't hear you.

It's realistic, but I Usually run around on foot and call horse only for long trek, so this is annoying.

Not to mention killing a bunch of (defenseless little) animals to get those purdy boots and silly hat.
That adds a few hours as well.
