What’s the most memorable NPC behavior you’ve ever seen?
When you think of “AI” in games, what’s the most memorable example of NPC behavior — good or bad — that stood out to you? Maybe an NPC that completely ruined your mission, or one that made the experience unforgettable?

Having a chance of being rescued by the other mercs n Far Cry 2 when you would usually die is pretty cool.
The Elder Scrolls IV. Monsters level up with you so when you get strong the enemy gets stronger. Sadly for me I leveled up too high and when I started the main mission I got stuck. Why? Because enemies keep killing my NPC and they just run into danger.
I remember the Turok AI being famously bad.

Also lets make this our ringtones, eh?

henry (the player character) viewing eileen (an NPC) dealing with the hauntings in her own apartment in silent hill 4, and later when she joins you.

theres a hole in the wall in which you can see eileen in her apartment throughout the game. at first she is just doing normal things, chatting with her friend on the phone or looking at herself in the mirror.

eventually she begins experiencing supernatural events, and she will be mumbling strange things or swatting at seemingly invisible foes in her apartment.

later on after she joins you, taking damage in battle can cause her to slowly become possessed. as she gradually becomes more possessed, she will utter strange, unintelligible dark speech, or speak of things she could not possibly know about (about the plot). she may begin shaking violently, attacking herself, or regress into an infantile child-like state and begin talking like a toddler. she may just abandon you, or refuse to move. its all random based on her possession level, and its all very disturbing.

i like to find the space where rng aligns and things don't happen, its more interesting what a computer won't do

in real life this guy walked into the store I worked at with an open jacket but he was shirtless underneath, he asked for white nail polish

kind of strong behaviour tbh, lad sounded very comfortable with himself. if only we could all be so relaxed

I think he was going through an episode because he didn't seem to be aware that he was partially shirtless, he left the store for a bit, came back with sunglasses on and his jacket closed, and asked the same thing again (??) so I think something was going on mentally

aw, well now i take it back. that is a bit sad, hopefully the guy found his way out of whatever predicament he was currently facing. i have been there, it is not fun to be disassociating.
I can only recall two recent ones. It's memorable because I play games set to a high difficulty, and it becomes very ironically apparent when someone is absent.
  1. There was an NPC officer class (in Day of Infamy)—whose pathfinding glitched out—that seemingly "decided" to be stuck at spawn as it peacefully gazed into the blue sky. I had to painfully witness this every time I died, as me and the other grunts were barely holding onto our position in frontline combat. It didn't move for the entire match – that NPC's reputation as our one and only officer precedes it.

  2. Another one from a different game (stalker CoP) was when the "brave and triumphant heroes"—practically an entire platoon of them (as I had a mod installed)—decided to unanimously leave the safety of the HQ as I gave up and returned from fiercely defending an objective for an unnecessary ~30 minutes while waiting for their arrival as I was fighting an infinite swarm loop of monsters and bandits. They "captured" it when I left between a wave cool-down after clearing house.

I got paid 'nothing', as I heard their dazzling report over the intercom cheerily announcing their latest success while I was left dragging my feet behind me and feeling dumbfounded with a suit now full of bullet holes and tears. 😒

There are hardly any video games designed with the same love for details as Far Cry 2. You could be getting dragged out of hell as you are manually hip-firing over the guy's shoulder. What a true gem that game is.

It's always a warm welcome with that NPC.

The most memorable NPCs are those that have some kind of quirk, or their character is built around one, making them recognizable. It could even be an exaggerated archetype trait - for example, a behavioral tic like a cute female character who becomes nauseous at the sight of blood, or an unusual interest like a stern, dark necromancer who is passionate about collecting cute plush bunnies. I find it adorable when an NPC flirts with the hero or tries to form a special connection.

NPC behaviour.
There was a game called Feud on the C64.
You were a Wizard and you gathered ingredients to make your spells and then you would hunt the Enemy Wizard who was doing the same.

Even looking at it now to me it looks bit scary i n a nostalgia way- pity about the music.
