Texas teen jailed for Facebook comment.
A teenager called Justin Carter has been in jail since 2014 for a sarcastic comment he made on Facebook when he was 18.

America really has no freedom of speech at all. It's just a police state where we arrest kids for saying silly things and jail them indefinitely.

What was said?
America has fallen /s
Is he still a teenager?
OP how about a source for this story?
According to articles on this very subject, Justin Carter got into a verbal exchange with another League of Legends player, who was then quoted saying, "I'm f- - - - - in the head alright, I think I'ma SHOOT UP A KINDERGARTEN [...] AND WATCH THE BLOOD OF THE INNOCENT RAIN DOWN [...] AND EAT THE BEATING HEART OF ONE OF THEM." I am not entirely sure how what he said could be taken out of context.

he's been in jail 11 years, 18 years old at the time of offence, and he is still a teenager?

You ignored the part where he said lol jk right after. It was a simple joke, he had no access to weapons and had made no plans. He also didn't write in all capitals like you did.

Threatening and making terroristic threat both are crimes in every state. The OP needs to provide the source of the news and how long did Justin in prison for?

You’re right — I have to remember that when someone says something completely inappropriate and just adds “lol” at the end, it doesn’t automatically make it a joke. Words have impact, and intent isn’t always clear — sometimes what someone thinks is a joke can still have serious consequences.

This got him 4+ years in prison, literal words that any sensible person would acknowledge is just a joke. The fact he's been put in prison for it is a disgrace and immoral.

Lmao, the edgy 12 year old mindset. "Im going to say what I hope will get a reaction", and he sure got a reaction. Should have known better, but at the same time we have legit criminals getting slaps on the wrists.

Our politicians are proof of that.

Make some edgy online comments threatening murder, thall be 10 years son.

Steal billions in taxpayer money, poison the earth and the lifeforms inhabiting it, its ok, thats just good business sense, heres a fine of a million dollars and pinky promise you wont do it again ok.

Reminds me a bit of the online porn restrictions.

Yes we care that children see naked bitty parts. But children starving from a foodstamp shutdown, who the ♥♥♥♥ cares about that!

Itll be the poorest people who suffer, minorities, appalachians. Like despite what a bunch of you privileged people think. You have to work for food stamps unless your disabled, which is almost impossible to prove unless you are actually disabled. Sad that millions of people cant be paid a minimum wage enough to pay for groceries and bills.

♥♥♥♥ it, ceos need their superyachts.

If he is still in prison, I agree that it is a little excessive. I am simply providing facts to others questions about what was said. As someone who has faced action due to something I said that was taken out of context, I understand the frustration. Yet, making a joke about that topic.... kinda dumb on his part regardless of his intent.

Yeah, see, this doesn't fall under "protected speech" in the context of America's school shooting epidemic.

If one of my students were to make a threat like this, they'd be removed from campus and their program of study with the quickness, and no amount of "it was just for the lulz" would change that. Because threats that then metastasized into actual killings have gone unnoticed or unheeded in the past, no games are played whatsoever with modern shooting threats.

People keep forgetting that "freedom of speech" does not mean freedom from responsibility for the things we say. Laughing about a school shooting, while monstrous, isn't a jailable offense; threatening one is. This is not rocket surgery, and trying to play the "it wuz just a joke u guis; where muh freeze peach" card is an indication both of significant cowardice and a youth spent in an absolute absence of consequence for garbage behavior.
