The U.S. Constitution does not require a President to be of any specific religion; in fact, it explicitly prohibits any religious test as a qualification for public office.

Yes, but an atheist president would have a very difficult time getting elected.

This is why I believe there are people in congress who only say that they are Christian so they can be reelected. But in private: They are non-religious or even an atheist. They just can't say it out loud or they will NOT be reelected. Unless they were in a blue state. But even then the chance of reelection would be very small.
