they contain generally less meat than you think.. contain a sizable amount of filler thats essentially woodpulp (which is not toxic but has no nutrucial value) and water (with is bound to the meat with certain chemicals like that woodpulp to bulk op the weight)
alongside that.. they often contain unhealthy amounts of salt and flavour enhancers that are well above the recomended daily intake
as for the meat part.. food safety agencies are not always doing their job and ground meat is the easierst to mix in other stuff over 90% of the ground meat out their contains meat of annimals.. in about 30% of cases on purpose.. by adding chicken or pork aka cheaper types of meat to bulk more expensive ones like beef..
-> in a lower percentage of cases of about 8% there was found part of the ground meat was actual illigal for consumption.. this can be meat from annimals that have recieved medication in their life that makes them unfit for human consumption, meat that has a higher bacteria content or fungus content than is allowed (rotten) or meat that is ment for annimal consumption (which means it came into direct contect with the feces in the intestines as the sterility rules for that waste meat is not as strict as for human meat as dogs have higher stomach acidity and can handle that stuff better)

it has happend that downright slimy grean moldy very spoiled meat is dragged trough clorine to bring the bacteria count down (but adding clorine which is forbidden to be added to food for humans in the eu.. in the usa this is allowed).. than you ground it down in a mixture with good fresh beef so you pass the maximum alowed values.. and off you go..

sure if found out these practaces are ended but they happen way more often than foodsafty can find and if shut down it often has already been going for years....
