Concerns About Age Verification Systems – Privacy & Security Risks
I’ve been following the recent talks about mandatory age verification for digital platforms, including Steam, and honestly I think it’s a dangerous path.
• Privacy Risks: Age verification usually means handing over sensitive personal data (ID scans, phone numbers, payment details). Once this data is stored, it becomes a target. Data breaches happen all the time, and if one of these databases gets leaked, the consequences are irreversible.
• Security Concerns: The more platforms require ID verification, the more copies of your private information exist in different places. Each of those is a potential weak point. We’ve already seen companies with “state of the art security” get hacked.
• Unnecessary for Gamers: I legally own all my games and I make sure to preserve them DRM-free (both from GOG and Steam, to back up my library). My games are safe, my data is safe. But if age verification becomes mandatory, suddenly I’d be forced to give up private info just to access what I already own.

This feels less like “protecting minors” and more like creeping surveillance and data harvesting.

I will never hand over my personal data for this. And if the first big breaches happen, they’ll be forced to find another solution anyway.

What do you all think? Do you trust these systems with your ID and personal data, or do you see the same risks I do?

i trust my VPN
I would delete steam and sail the seas before I ever upload any kind of private details on the internet, the tea app was supposed to be a warning to us all.
It never was about protecting minors. It’s so governments can have more power.

Besides… it should be the parents responsibility on moderating their kids on what they do online.
It is about control.
You get some half wits who see the banner and go flocking to it but it won't help anything for their cause but it WILL be more control to the government over You.

Zombie knives was a big thing in the news and I'm thinking it won't stop anything, it is a cheap way to tell people what to do, say it is working and put nothing into the community.
I dont think its all about privacy tbh. The thing that bugs me most is do we really trust companies with that data? Exploitation?

Feels like a way for them to get richer and leave us more vulnerable.

And I reckon its aimed at new accounts or accounts that may be flagged especially the ones that might belong to younger users. Theres no way they can check every single person though it would be impossible.
This was never about protecting kids. This is all about control.

Honestly, who thought it is good idea for ID verification? Then what if a hacker manages to break through their servers, like ID or whatever it was?

I do think it is quite dumb because it is like, asking them to give their real ID to gov before data breaches.

sooner or later this is going to happen to every site that stores your id :steamhappy:

handing over sensitive personal data so you can look at cartoon pr0n and touch your sensitive personal data is a fair deal.

Exactly
Didn't you already spam a thread about this?
Oh no. Anyway.

The internet isn't worth it. They'll ask for ID every browser search or page.
I understand that. If you don't want to do this, then don't do it. It's your choice.
If they have a problem with you not doing that, it's their problem.
