looking for a "forever game"
looking for something that I can always come back to. Something that is just fun to play. For me personally I like shooters alot, I like looting a fair bit too. would like a progression system that keeps you wanting to play, however I dont like grinding very much so survival games are probably out of the question. Curious what you guys would recommend.

haha play that with my wife already! What I'm looking for is more singleplayer as she doesn't always want to play.
Fallout 4 or New Vegas.
Cause it's either that or play skyrim with guns mod.
Sims 3 since you can build a family empire and collect so much ingame stuff. There is no end to the game.
Forever games impossible for me, ill always have to move on
Helldivers 2. You've got 15-ish (i forget the count) warbonds to grind through, Diver. Get to it.
Any of the Sims games.

There really is no end, you just move onto a new house and start over.

World of warcraft? Blizzard seems intent to crank out silly expansions forever.

The fact that we are now two decades without a new Sim City is a travesty.
Rimworld.

And you can buy it independently of Steam so it will never go off-line.
This really would be up to others to agree or disagree.

Mount and Blade Warband or Mount and Blade Fire and Sword.

You put them on normal difficulty and don't use cheats, they are time well spent games.

Warband is more swords and so on.

Fire and Sword is shooters and blades think musketeers.

The general thing of the games is sandbox, you are placed on a map and told do what you like stay a small time bandit / bandit catcher or build up to a grand army under your command and take war to kingdoms.
If you want shooters, there's always DOOM (the old ones, not the new ones). You have decades worth of mods to keep you busy, with even new official ones by Romero himself still releasing like Sigil or Sigil 2! Or even Bethesda still releasing new mods for these old games like with the super recent Legacy Of Rust expansion!

Otherwise I'd suggest looking into arcade shooters (or shmups). Stuff along the lines of Gradius or Mushihimesama (or any CAVE game tbh). Easy to pick up, hard to master, and really fun to go for score in. There's so many of these that you can jump between them if you want some variety.

Some type of MMO

Guild Wars 2 is free, has looting, progression system is good, isn't too grindy.
Strategy games are about as close to forever games as you'll get. FPS games will eventually be to fast for your reflexes and the kids you play against will start to annoy you.
