Because Valve allowed it to be discussed again, for some mind boggling reason.
Someone is really bored.

Its Monday, can't blame them.
This is one of the only places you can talk about it and not get banned instantly, or be prevented from posting at all, like in Reddit.

The more you try to silence people, the more they will want to speak out.

In your case, you’re perfectly fine with political talk, as long as it’s political talk you agree with.

Actually, no. I prefer there to be no political talk whatsoever. But so long as there is, I'll chime in with my opinion.

There's a big reason why most platforms and communities do not allow it and OT is evidence of why.

Now that's a language I understand.

There's no lefts or rights, you either want to kill Chaos or you are Chaos.
Because gamers have been radicalised to sit around discussing politics like old men.
It happened about the time Russia invaded Ukraine, so I guess you can blame that event, or the fact they got rid of moderators and changed the rule around that time as well. In the end, you can't really discuss current affairs without there being some political implications, so in order to facilitate such discussions, politics had to be allowed.

Most political discussions are started by about a dozen people on OT, and their alt accounts. During the last election one admitted to being paid to post a certain view, but I can't imagine Off Topic being a primary spot to advocate for one position or the other.

Feel free to start nonpolitical threads, I am sure some people will appreciate seeing something other than politics.

This is the shrine of Chaos. He's here, we just have to hunt him down.
