33.7% of users on steam use Chinese. 33.5% use English
Was watching this video and was hit with this 2024 data..

(yes, I'm aware that it's about a different issue. I am not talking about that issue and you can change your settings to resolve it. I am talking about the graph I time stamped)

I'm actually really surprised cause I thought Steam wasn't a thing in China cause they had a massive mobile gaming market and Tencent.
Is Steam a big deal in China or is it not a big deal they just have that many people?

Genuinely curious. If anyone has any insight on that I'd genuinely be interested in knowing.

Guess I'll put a lazy google translate for simplified Chinese and hope what ever gets translated makes sense.

Man, last time I used that word Steam covered the last four letters with hearts.

Progress marches on, I guess. :steamhappy:

I have a feeling a lot of the Steam forum traffic is botted hence why posting anything and not catching a ban is a nightmare.

But I don't think it's China, or rather all China.
I do remember a Taiwan number 1 joke I made years back and every time someone got upset I moved China at a lower and lower ranking got massive replies (in case you are wondering Chine was move to the #70 or #80 by the end of the joke and the thread eventually got deleted)

The thing is 33.5% isn't just the USA, it's the entire english speaking world and Steam is the goto digital store for game purchases.
33.7% for China is surprising to me because yeah, China has around a billion people but as far as I understood Chinese usually prefer domestic storefronts through their tech sector or mobile style games, and steam is in a quasi legal state in China where it technically isn't approved and can get you in trouble if you buy a game that isn't legal in China, but it isn't outright banned and treated as a threat like Google, Facebook, or Twitter which have US military ties.

It seemed a bit surprising that they outnumber every English speaker for a service that is just kinda "meh" in popularity over there.
Then again, they do have a lot of people....

I don't speak Chinese. But if you are curious Google has a Traditional Chinese option so here is the Traditional Chinese Google slop translation....

Steam released a Chinese version a few years ago that they are legally allowed to use. it’s stripped of most community features to keep them from seeing things their government disagrees with. But they were also using it before that version released. All hail the great VPN

Valve’s laissez-faire attitude toward the Chinese is weird. They should make the Chinese use their own client. There's a reason it exists ...

mebbe the Chinese version of Steam has McEggrolls customized for their market

Chinese people outside of China likely use normal Steam in Chinese, Chinese people in China either use its neutered SteamChina client or use VPN

I'm guessing that data only applies to the original Steam, which makes it kind of crazy it's so neck and neck

Oh right, I forgot about the millions of bots. Those Chinese bots are everywhere

No doubt spamming OT with political bait threads with an unhealthy obsession of US politics.
