android is becoming like ios by the end of next year, app sideloading won't be allowed
for security, to protect you and protect the children, soon google will not allow people to install any app they want on their regular android phones.
as of today people can install apps from different stores or anywhere, no need for google approval, you can download apk and install. Google plans to stop allowing this because of "security"
this is happening while regulations are tightening in several countries regarding users privacy and surveillance

custom roms such as grapheneos, calyos and lineageos aren't affected by this, but this is only a very small % of all users, most users just have the regular google android system that comes preinstalled with the phone

Weren't Apple forced just last year by the EU to allow sideloading?
Good custom ROM support is a minimum for every phone I buy, ever since I got my first smartphone (a Samsung Galaxy Nexus - One of the GOAT IMO) it has been a feature I can't live without. Proprietary bloated crapware that comes preinstalled on most Android phones only harms the user experience.

I've been running LineageOS, CyanogenMod, and AOKP on every smartphone I've owned and they are just a plain better experience than most proprietary ROMs that come preinstalled on these devices

Along with Google's changes, Samsung has recently locked the bootloaders on all of their recent devices (although they've been doing this for longer in North America) effectively making them proprietary tyrants[www.gnu.org] as described by GNU.

These combined set a dangerous president in Android. Personally, I'll be switching to a GNU/Linux compatible phone such as a OnePlus 6T running Mobian as soon as I can since it would better serve my needs.

so now it won't possible to install a custom rom on a samsung device right?

Yep, unless you find an exploit it won't be possible to install custom ROMs on these devices. When I was going to purchace my last smartphone (deciding between a Samsung Galaxy S8 and a Google Pixel 2 XL) that was ultimately what it came down to. Now they've taken that absolutely ass-backwards idea they implemented for for close to a decade ago now in North America international.

You can read more about it here: https://www.sammobile.com/news/say-goodbye-to-your-custom-roms-as-one-ui-8-kills-bootloader-unlock/

for most people, running a real linux system on a phone won't fulfill their needs because of no apps
custom roms like grapheneos and lineageos do run most of the apps while avoiding most of the bad stuff from a default android device

I am not sure what to feel when people program a piece of rock in this case CPU to function this or that way, are they themselves function properly?

perhaps later google also won't allow custom roms on pixel devices

I wish I could use GrapheneOS.
It is such cruel irony that one of the most anti-Google roms only works on Google phones.

indeed, grapheneos is probably the best one out there and so easy to install. But as of today it's only for pixel phones

I acknowledge that most probably won't be able to use GNU/Linux on their smartphone (yet), I'm more just outlining my usecase for a phone.

The few Android apps I rely on run well in Waydroid. The biggest thing with Android is all the little scripts and programs I've made to automate things over the years (such as backups and updates among more things) I've developed for my GNU/Linux systems, and while I can kinda use them on Android using Termux it's quite akward and Termux doesn't have full access to the filesystem unless I use root. I get these features are in place for a reason, but for me they are a hindrance.

am using a Google phone, but mine is one generation too old to support any version of Graphene.

Oh well, it still runs great with the latest version of LineageOS without any Google services.

People say "get an iPhone" if you want long lasting software updates, yet if you are willing to install custom ROMs your phone can even outlast an iPhone.

The iPhone X (the competing iPhone at the time) is now running an older OS than my Pixel 2 XL. It's also amazing just how fast it still is after all that time.
