Invoke Article 5 and listen to the deathly silence that follows, as no-one outside of America cares two hoots about it any more (brought about by US rhetoric).

Americans wouldn't need to sign up as their forces currently would be able to defend their shores.

They would have to get more active around South China Sea and The Suez and possibly do something with Africa (Trump made the USA take big step back there).

The longer run would be more complicated than the actual campaign to kick the Chinese Forces out of the US territory.

It depends on the magnitude of the attack, sinking a ship would have a different response than nuking a city.
