The Imperium in 40k already had it's "war against the robots" long before the Emperor revealed himself. There are actually stories about old AI powered vessels experiencing time dilation from high speed non-FTL travel and making contact with Imperium ships. The AI is shocked at how primitive and unevolved humanity became in the future. Their reliance on the warp is basically spells and magic compared to the high technology that humanity used in the past.
The Imperium doesn't build advanced computers anymore, and instead loads cybernetics into humans to turn them into servitors in order to accomplish the same tasks that AI used to do. But servitors aren't as good as AI, and technological progress has stalled as a result. They don't trust computers because they become corrupt, and they rely on the Warp for FTL and many of their most powerful warriors are psykers. This has become a roadblock to the development of new technology. They not only need better computation systems, but their reliance on the Warp had basically eliminated the scientific method. They don't have the mentality to perform hard research anymore. They see the world in terms of Gods and the Warp, not as a world driven by fundamental forces of nature.
As a result Nurgle is no doubt the most powerful chaos god, and he considers the Imperium to be a source of worship. The Imperium of Man is the most powerful faction in the galaxy and it strengthens him with its stagnation, it's misery, it's decay. Human society is slowly breaking down over the span of millennia and Nurgle is giggling as he watches it unfold.
Some have asked could big E defeat the chaos gods? I think he could beat Slaanesh, Tzeentch, and even Khorne in single combat. But Nurgle would give him a hard time, and yes I know big E confronted Nurgle in the lore to save his son Roboute Guilliman. He destroyed one of Nurgle's warp gardens, but I think Nurgle has many of these, and this was back when big E still had a living, breathing fully functioning body.
Tens of thousands of years later, big E has been rotting on the golden throne for millennia, the Imperium is stagnating, and I think Nurgle has the last laugh. He's growing stronger with every passing year.
