Never bought anything associated with Assassin's Creed again.
But I would tend to agree with St✩rlight.
How does it play on PC now?
I have it on PS3.
I am sure it has to be better by now but again, I will never purchase it.
Ports from PC to Console or from Console to PC that give you no option to customize your controls or key bindings the way you want are pretty much a crime in my book.
AC1 did have repetitive mechanics but it also had a great story and solid combat system. It hooked me on Altair's story. Changing to a new ancestor in the sequels made me lose interest in the series. Honestly I'm not a fan of the Renaissance era I think it is Venice that it switched to? Meh.
Then I wasn't interested in Black Flag because while I do like naval combat, I specifically like naval combat because of the boats. I want to see different historical vessels and pick and choose different ships, look at the guns that are loaded into them. Can I purchase different cannons from different historical cannon-makers? While it's a different setting this is one thing I love about World of Warships. They scratch that itch. Every vessel, every gun, every captain has a different story behind them that you can learn about, and I love to try out new ships and mix and match captains. Even change my ship loadout.
Black Flag only lets you captain one ship. Which makes me think it's a gimmick. This is little baby's naval simulator. You might as well be using the raft in Legend of Zelda because it's just a method of travel. It's not a piece of history and neither is it something I can collect.
Black Flag for naval combat and in general is more arcade style.
My problem with it is you cannot customise enough or get a rowing boat with a catapult and attempt to take on Ships.
It is exciting to a degree another problem is it throws all the great fun stuff at you right at the beginning of what combat can be like later in the game so its good for training but it also take a
little of the 'wow this is so intense' bit away.
Still good.
The fighting with ships is intense and i feel it very rewarding when i use a combination of cannons and skill / timing and then swashbuckle across to the other ship and kick ass or get your ass kicked and figure a way to survive in this battle.
The ship fighting on board is fun, it really is like taking a pirate film of old and swooping in and not always succeeding.
Is it a gimmick?
It is not a Naval Simulator that is for sure.
It is an action arcadey with lots of good touches for Naval combat.
If you want it to be hyper realistic I don't know any modern game that fits that bill but then i havnt looked much for one.
If there is one out there it won't have the amount of playing that Black Flag does.
-I speak from a PS3 point of view not the PC port / version.
*It is a lot of fighting off ships too and missions and side tasks. Exploring The Carribean cities and the world is big part of it on foot.
Then there is underwater missions too and whaling and I really need to set my ps3 up again just to play this once more.
You don't need to replay them IIRC, just launch the game.
