A few decades ago, it wasn't uncommon to see guns hanging in the back window of trucks in the school parking lots, and every kid had a pocketknife.

i'll bite.

If something happens you will have numerous people with varying training and perspectives of the situation all pulling weapons and shouting / getting shot at by each other.

they tried this in the novel "battle royale" by koushun takami, also had a film version. long story short, everyone died.

In todays society its a horrible idea. That's why.
There are a lot of hotheaded kids, with no impulse control.
