Found Footage movies
The found footage genre of movies is one of my favorites in horror. Most are familiar with The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity but beyond those I do not feel the genre really gets that much attention. So, I wanted to make a list of some of my favorite ones:

Noroi: The Curse (2005)
Hell House LLC (2015)
Lake Mungo (2008)
Cloverfield (2008)
Trollhunter (2010)
Rec (the original Spanish version 2007)
V/H/S and it's sequels (Many say that V/H/S2 and V/H/S94 are the best ones, I'd agree)
The Tunnel (2011)
The Borderlands (2013, also known as Final Prayer in the US)

Idk if I'd recommend Deadstream (2022) or The Dinosaur Project (2012) but they sure were an experience. I have not seen Cannibal Holocaust but I'd like to hear people's thoughts on it that have seen it given that it is often considered the first found footage movie.

What are your thoughts on the genre? Do you have any recommendations to watch?

I love it when it is done right and genuinely unsettling, I would have to recommend, Creep (2014), it's more of a thriller than typical horror though, at least that's what I think
Sucks ass, I never like them, yez good they can make money but I could also make lazy movie like that but I'm not going to for don't like making ♥♥♥♥ like that, I most be really good or I'm not making it

I really have to rewatch that movie. I feel like I didn't appreciate it for what it was at the time if that makes sense.
Not a fan of them in general but Lake Mungo is damn good. Also the Korean found footage film Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum is a lot of fun.

I can see how you can see them as lazy movies but I think the practical effects of the V/H/S movies is stellar. Rattama is a good example.
Also: Willow Creek is pretty good, specifically a Bigfoot related found footage film surprisingly directed by Bobcat Goldthwait.

I've never heard of that one! I'll have to add it to my found footage list to watch later.

Oh I've seen that one! A friend and I love watching bigfoot related horror movies. Big Legend is my favorite so far but I'd say more for comical reasons.
No surprise people got tired of them, but they can be fine.

To the list, I'll add The Bay (2012) for a different flavor.

I do feel like the Paranormal Activity movies took the spotlight and ran the genre into the ground with all the sequels.

I haven't seen that one yet though. An ecological disaster found footage movie sounds cool! I'll add it to my list. I actually have a whole bunch on here but I think getting recommendations from people helps me find the best ones to watch first.
The genre itself is basically a subgenre of the "mockumentary" (e.g. Ghostwatch). I think Hell House LLC has interviews and stuff in addition to the "found footage," whereas Paranormal Activity is just the footage with no context other than maybe a bit of text at the beginning (IIRC). Fake archival footage vs fake documentary. Pretty much the same deal.
i quite love the subgenre, as a horror enjoyer. here are some i enjoyed that i can be suggesting that you did not:

- as above so below (2014)
- the blair witch project (1999)
- the taking of deborah logan (2014)
- quarantine (2008) this is the american remake of REC 1, its very good!
- man bites dog (1992)
- afflicted (2013)
- creep (2014) also creep 2 (2017), but its not nearly as good as 1 imo
- the visit (2015)
- grave encounters (2011) and also grave encounters 2, but its not nearly as good as 1 imo
- the bay (2012)
- europa report (2013)
- the houses october built (2014) and also houses october built 2, but its not nearly as good as 1
- be my cat: a film for anne (2015)
- final prayer (2013)
- the poughkeepsie tapes (2007)
- apollo 18 (2011)
- theyre watching (2016)
- secreto matusita (2014)
- la cueva (2014)
- boots on the ground (2017)
- the dark tapes (2016)

I think that was near the end of the first one? I know the second one is a straight continuation so perhaps it might have been in the beginning of that one but I'm fairly certain it's the first. Even though the sequel was kind of goofy I still liked it. The third one, though, is like a whole different kind of movie. They completely drop the found footage angle but I still liked it, especially the ending.
