I've never had backlash nor have ever been called superficial either. I think as long as you don't act creepy nor a jerk, then you probably won't get criticism for it.
It is necessary to maintain the balance, more so a neutral stance or the one that's the most relatable to the majority of dominant participants to prevent the shattering of the image between the said group of people.
It's not necessarily about lying, but merely about avoiding the harsh judgement that'd be quite guaranteed to come upon voicing the true thoughts.
