This is the first generation that console prices haven't decreased.

I'm pretty sure when I bought the Super Nintendo it was cheaper than the game I bought with it.

Retail. The SNES (at the time it was the new, slimmer one) cost 50 bucks, and the game cost (Final Fantasy III) cost 70.

I'm also pretty sure the Playstation and PS2, not to mention the X360, were cheaper in the later years of their lifespans.

PS5 going up in price may indeed be unprecedented.

You should see the price rises on meat and electric, OP.
Let China have their losing war. Noone plays playstation except people who googled which to buy and chose audio/video over gaming.
All the more reason to be a Steam chad, why even buy a console?

Does playstation even have forums? SAD!

Wasn't just the PlayStation 5, also the first Nintendo Switch and accessories for the Switch 2.

Lmao, oh boo hoo, my console that started the trend of $70 and now $80 games is costing more.

Sony is raising prices because they know they can get away with it. They know people will pay more and they know this because people were paying more when they were getting scalped, they continued to buy the games at higher prices, they continue to buy accessories at higher prices. They know people will pay more, so they're charging more than what tariffs alone would have resulted in.

But it's even more funny to me that the PS5 in the US is STILL noticeably cheaper than it is in the UK and EU.
good. most gaming is just an unhealthy habit anyway.
Good thing, I already owned PS5 pro. I am waiting for PS6 that may comes out. :steamhappy:

Imagine paying $799 to post on the steam forums about games, holy cow what a divine comedy this life is.

Just like the PS3 it's reminding me, A MEMORY, OF A TIME WHEN...

I CRIED SO HARD FOR LAUNCH TITLES.

Was Playstation 4 price reduced? I forgot.

Technically the switch had a price drop when the switch light was introduced. I'll get more into that in a little bit though. Yes, it is the first time prices haven't gone down, although that was a trend that was happening even before this most recent event.

The price went up slightly in other regions earlier this year[blog.playstation.com].

These price drops don't just happen randomly though. They usually coincide with a model refresh. Vertical Wii to horizontal Wii U that drops gamecube compatibility. Playstation 3 to Playstation 3 Slim that dropped Playstation 2 compatibility. Dol-001 Gamecube to Dol 101 gamecube which dropped the Digital A/V Out port. S.N.E.S. to S.N.E.S. Jr. which doesn't have R.G.B. output That's why I count the Switch light as a price drop. It's a cost reduced model that has been slimmed down with reduced functionality, like the other price dropped consoles.

And as for Sony? If they were going to drop the Playstation 5 prices, they would have done it with the slim refresh, like they did with the Playstation 3, but instead they jacked up the price of the digital edition by $50 and decided to release a disc drive addon for another $50

Also, truth be told, I'm not so sure this is actually tariff related. I think this is something they were going to do anyway. Why do I say this? The price only went up $50.[blog.playstation.com] The only model that grew more expensive relative to other regions is the pro.

This coincides with an equivalent price hike on base models in Europe and Oceania earlier this year[blog.playstation.com], where tariffs haven't been implemented.

If it was tariff related, I would have thought the U.S.A. would be suffering the price hike alone, or that it would be greater than the amount seen in other regions, but this $50 price hike is an international thing. Moreover, if it was tariff related, they'd be jacking prices on the accessories too. They're not.

Maybe it's tariff related, and other regions are subsidizing the U.S.A'. though. That'd also make sense because Sony doesn't really make their profits off of the consoles. They make their profits on the licensing scheme.

The playstation blog only cites a challenging economic environment for the price hikes, which could be tariffs, but maybe not. In any case, the price hikes in Europe and Oceania are also due to a challenging economic environment. What challenges caused the international price hikes?

Yeah, I was old enough to remember PS3 that was $600 at launch. That would be only $100 more.

$500 in 2020 is $625 in 2025. So the fact it was still $500 means that yeah, it's price did decrease. An additional $50 is still $75 less than launch price.

Very cool my friend, I remember when my dad took me to KB toys to get my SNES at 200 dollars. It was great time.

Still remember going to Sears and gettting FF3 (which is FF6 for the people that dont know) at 60 dollary doos.

Thankfully I'm a grown man and I see that PS prices are outrageous and I just enjoy PC gaming with my bundles of 2 dollar digital games.

Sometimes ya gotta get with the times.
