Do migrants make good soldiers for a country?
So I help to run a country and we are increasingly concerned about Russian aggression and the increasing likelihood of a coalition with boots on the ground to fend off the threat to us and our friends.

We also noticed that the vast majority of our migrants and refugees are actually young males of fighting age, but otherwise unskilled.

Do you guys think open borders is a good policy for waging war in the short term or am I wasting my time and should focus on conscripting the native population?

Yes, they can fulfill the roles necessary easily.

However, as a focus for a recruitment it leaves a lot to be desired. How many migrants are you really going to have? Is the source really sustainable? You can fold them into your current force, but saying "I want all my military front line to be migrants" is pretty hard to pull off.

For instance, in Dwarf Fortress, many migrants are useful for military roles as they do not have immediate in-fortress associations. Nobody will miss them when they die. However, neither will their allies go berserk and cut down greater demons when they die.

Well Russia seems to enjoy using migrant soldiers duped into Russia by dictators/fake visas, so I suppose the real-world evidence is that it works
I don't get all the anti-Russia hate.

Do people only get their news from the corporate media or what?
Be careful about who you arm.

When England was set to fall into Civil War, Parliament formed the New Model Army. The first permanent standing army in the world. The New Model Army, under the command of Sir Thomas Fairfax and Oliver Cromwell fought against and defeated King Charles II's Cavalier forces. Subsequently the army decamped to London.

And then this army suddenly discovered that they were the only people in London with weapons and Parliament suddenly discovered that they had no weapons and oh, now this Oliver Cromwell guy is giving us orders.

When you arm people you give them power. When you give power to people who have no other claims or rights, suddenly you may find those people demanding claims or rights to which they are not entitled and you will have no ability to disarm them because you asked them to disarm you so that they would fight so that you didn't have to.

Yes.
We had loads of immigrated Marines in my unit and most others as well. Hispanics from all down the Yucatan, Phillipines, Nigerians, Liberians, Laotians, Cambodian, etc. They were all excellent performers.

I have a personal prejudice with the Phillipino, but thats just personal experiences. No need for me to add to that other than to say did encounter a disproportionate amount of turds on my floats, mostly within the Navy.
No. Had many "Green Card" holders under me in the US military. Focuses all their time trying to figure out how to get benefits for their parents/family members. Refused to get citizenship because then they would get Security Clearances and be deployable.
Stole everything not nailed down.

Spent much of their time collecting peoples names, addresses, and Social Security numbers to sell for identity theft fraud schemes to steal money.

Good luck Europe!
Frontline infantry.
It depends on the country, some of them inspire more patriotism than others, most of them are in it for the benefits
