Which Total War game?

Imagine you got a padawan who needs to know the greatness not just of gaming but of great strategical command that is found in Total War Series.

Which would you recommend as a First ?
Which would you recommend as The Next Level?
And Which is The Ultimate Edition?

I would go the first Shogun.

Then Medieval 2 Definitive Edition. - with lots of cheats because seriously the economy part of the game really is boring and near pointless. I am a king I will have money and if not I will execute the wealthy and eat the peasants.
I know my rights as a Feudal King I read Shakespeare once.

Ultimate Edition?

the warhammer trilogy, specifically the second one, are my favourite TW games.

other than that, medieval 2 because it has one of the best conversion mods ever (turns it into middle-earth).

Oh man. Shogun 2 is just so well done.

Then I would recommend the Warhammer trilogy just for sheer scope and content.

Napoleon imo has the most strategic depth, and is the most fun (I'd say Empire because of the game mechanics and campaign, but it has too many bugs and exploits, some troops are massively overpowered. Napoleon fixes most of these things, not to mention the better AI and better graphics and SFX, so I'll have to recommend Napoleon. Maybe if CA release Empire 2 I'll change my mind

)

I've only really played Shogun 2 and Warhammer trilogy. They are great but I think Shogun might be better balanced, but Warhammer has a huge amount of variety between factions and playstyles of factions.

Warhammer is a disgrace and a world away from what Total war is, It's completely ruined the series. Play Med 2 if you want the actual Total war experience.

rome total war
original, non remastered.. I got a cdrom they can borrow.. or an .iso i can burn for them.

it also excists on android. (dosbox) so I might have them spend the 12 euro to have the original rome total war on their phone

I would recommend Shogun 2 first. You can play that with your friends, and it's a blast. You can't go wrong.

Next I'd recommend Medieval 2, the Kingdoms' campaigns, and then the Lord of the Rings mod.

The ultimate edition is probably Warhammer 3 with all previous games and expansions, but I have no interest in that so I can't vouch for it.
