Mordheim on Sale! Nearly Over!
https://store.steampowered.com/app/276810/Mordheim_City_of_the_Damned/

The sale is nearly over and I beseech all of thee who are not of the kursed Train Spotterz to go forth and play it!
Look at the reviews too to see if its your Huckleberry.

Mordheim, My Review from a while ago
I am writing this as a new player to Mordheim.

Do the tutorials, I find doing the first 4 to understand how it works is helpful and then have a go in game and then finish the other tutorials off shortly after is a good way to do it.
They not big or over long just very useful.

The community will help you on the forums if your stuck with questions.

The game itself :
You are in charge of a Medieval gang that is aligned to some faction.
Mercenaries is the faction I usually play, they are human.

It is set in the City / Town of Mordheim.
Your goal other than beating up rival gangs / factions is to get stronger, get more gold and keep sending off Wyrdstones to your faction boss.
The game is battle after battle with different objectives and lots of locations around the town to fight over.
You don't actually get to keep the turf you are fighting over, its more to get Wyrdstones and kit and the opportunity to beat other people up.

This is not a game that will pander to you like so many other games out there. This game will punish you for stupidity and on occasion just bad luck, and that is part the reason it is a good game.
Your warband members matter. If you throw them as axe fodder then they may end up permanently injured or dead.
So you got to think about how you are going to get wyrdstones and keep your members intact.
The environment is great there are traps about so keep your eyes open and don't rush about.

Very satisfying when the enemy is approaching you and they step on a trap.

If you like gang warfare this is the game!
If you do lose a member you can get another and build them up there are a lot of options on how to build your squad to suit your playstyle.
If you want to practise with your squad without the risk of losing them then there is the skirmish mode where you can set up a game of one of your warbands and see how they fare in an environment that wont punish your main game if you make a mistake.

There are specific missions for your warband / faction in the main game it is up to you if you do them or just play as a gang making their wyrdstone payments.

Each day you get the battles to choose from, if you don't like the look of them you can spend some of your gold to send scouts out to find more missions.
These range in deployments and mission goals and secondary objectives.
After the battle you get to see how much xp your members have got and if they got enough you can choose which stats to build up.

The downside :
I said about secondary objectives and collecting wyrdstones.
There is a morale meter, in a sane world if you make the enemy flee the area you can continue to complete your secondary objective / collect more loot / wyrdstones.
In Mordheim if the enemy routs (or you do) then that is it, the ending screen tells you how you have done. So all that loot on the battlefield / cobbled roads are left uncollected. You do get some of the left over loot but keep that in mind might want to strategize a bit and collect lots of wyrdstones before pulversing the enemy / getting pulverised by the enemy.

That is not a huge game ender, just a bit 'where is the logic in that?'
Does not ruin the game at all (imo).

This is not a game about bravery, this is a game about gang warfare and using dirty tricks and ganging up where you can because if you dont do it , the enemy will be trying to.

I like the way you got different stances if you got some movement / offensive points left over after your go.
You can set up ambush points or 'overwatch' for your ranged units.
That is part of the charm, because you got multiple areas to form up defensive / offensive play at. You could have an ambusher waiting near a point where you know the enemy will be trying to climb up to or going up the stairs and bam! you smack them one or shoot them as they poke their head up the stairway.

Different factions have different ways of play but cannot really speak for them because I so far mainly play the human mercenaries.

I bought this on sale and recommend if you can get it on sale to buy it too.
IF you like the idea of braining a Skaven (rat creature) and then shooting his rodent friend for fun, this is the game for you.
If you like the idea of gang warfare on medieval German sounding town, this is the game for you.

If you like to go train spotting, this is not the game for you.

If you need some practice remember Skirmish mode is there and it has two options
1. to play as a stand alone battle with your warband and is good for practice or if you want no pressure.
2. to play it with the prizes and dangers to be carried over.

You got any opinions on Mordheim?
Or a Review for your game that is on sale?

why are the Steam reviews on that game so bad, in a nutshell?

Probably they don't understand how the hit % work.
It is not an 'easy' game - It won't make you feel like you can just walk through a battle.

You have to think do I risk sending that spearman taking on that skaven over therealone and hoping to keep it occupied while my Wolf Priest beats up that other skaven with the smuggler shooting it too.
Or
Do I pull that spearman to make a good solid victory over that skaven the Wolf Priest is fighting and Then....

Watch a youtube on it and see if you like it from that.
It is easy to belt a game down or big it up.
Out of the initiative turn based combat games i am really liking it still and have not tried the other factions.

A downside is the customisations could be a little more for aesthetics.

The balance is a mess, it's really awkward and slow to play, and it was abandoned before all of the promised content was added.

Though looking at it, the reviews aren't that bad. Better than I expected actually.

Speaking of Customisations,
Your warband which grows as you gain xp / levels.
Has a lot of custom to the characters for weapons and skills.
Permenent Injuries can add a very different factor into the squad too.
I got one very good spear Zealot who has high dodge and because he lost an arm he gets extra dodge %.
He is my go to guy when i want a dependable fighter to occupy one or two enemies.

Balance?
I can't speak for that personally .
you can choose your missions and see if the risk / reward is worth it or not.
If it says 'deadly' I usually avoid it and go for something else, you don't have to fight every day.
But you do need to get your wyrdstone orders in so don't slack off. Once those quotas are met you got money to burn and different factions to send them off to to get different bonuses as you get higher reputation with them.

I just hired a fanatic and a huge executioner did not take the path I had hoped - the one with a rifled smuggler waiting for them and their backup with them too.
It went around and straight into my flail wielding fanatic and pulverised the new recruit in two blows.
Got my Witch hunter Captain/ Leader to pin him and my own Executioner came to the combat a turn later and delivered vengeance.

The Smugglers can vary, one lost their ability to use ranged weapons so now they are very useulf with a sword and the other smuggler I keep boosting up their stats for ranged and in emergency bit on the melee / sword. BEcause of that tragedy I now have a great shot and a dependable fighter. They work well as a team.

The Wyrdstone loot and enemy type strength is a good indicator of what mission I would go for.

Not played multi player yet.
Is this like Battle Brothers?

I had youtubey look at battle brothers and no.

This is Mordheim - the guy waffles on but its first video i got up on search in ten seconds that showed the gameplay.

https://youtu.be/QvBYApWwj0k?t=1060

I started it at beginning of a mission and the guy is on mute for me maybe he says something useful - i dont know.
But it will show graphics and stuff. He may have sped up the video mine is bit slower than that.
Atmosphere looks pretty thick. Apparently I own it on GOG. Installing now. :steamhappy:

Drawback to GoG version is it does not have the multi player for it (as far as i know) - on steam you need discord to set it up - ask on Mordheim's steam forums how to set it up.

But yeah the atmosphere is what I really like about it.
There is not a place on there you think 'i could take my sweet Glendahoe here some day after the war...'

The sale is nearly over and I beseech all of thee who are not of the kursed Train Spotterz to go forth and play it!
Look at the reviews too to see if its your Huckleberry.

I don't need to look at the reviews. It's not the first sale the game has, and it won't be last -- the Warhammer stuff is not my cup of tea, and this thing is no exception. I'm ignoring all of these by default.

Well good for you.
I didnt like the balance of the early game, the enemy always ambushed me and killed my ppl, its insane that they know ur position while u dont know theirs

It is line of sight and if you got your ambush set up and they walk into it even if you did not know they were there before and they walked into it then bam you smack them one.

I find not charging about but treating it like an actual place of conflict and keeping your 'wits' helps a lot for that.

The Early game your warband is still getting its strength so everything has to be the buddy buddy system - i still am very cautious about sending someone off on their own.
