I think they only live in freshwater so start there

You need polarized sunglasses and then you can see in the not so deep water. Take some bait with you, form it into small balls and throw them near the riverbank and wait. They live mainly in muddy fresh waters.

Stick your arm in a hole while underwater, whatever latches onto your arm/hand, just pull it out.

Maybe you'll see a catfish.

if its too good to be true then its a Catfish.

Idk some catfish already come with spots built in. But maybe you could add spots with some kind of fish-safe marker that works underwater. If you add spots on them with a highly visible color it could make them easier to see too.

Nah that doesnt work. Just map out where they are and then you know the hotspots. As i said polarized glasses and then you can see them on the river banks. Catfish also have a super wide mouth and those funny mustaches, its pretty easy to distinguish them from other fish.
They also come often to the surface and gulp air.

their skin feels kinda rough, sorta like a coarse sandpaper, just give them a pat and you'll know what im talking about

i don't get this assessment, the easiest games to rack up hours in are social experiences. i've met so many girls who virtually live on community servers in fps games. its just so silly to equate something like this to gender.

That sounds reasonable. It'd be cool if they had polka dots on them though, and maybe some thickener for the mustaches, and flashing lights on their heads with multiple colors like a disco ball look, oh and put bell bottoms on them so it looks like they have legs. Well if we're going that far, just give them robot leg to fill out the bell bottoms.
