final fantasy tactics, but out of choice. because grinding in that game is immensely pleasurable.

mixing class combos and abilities, making obscenely broken combinations as the game progresses.

like:

- monk/thief
- knight/mystic
- black mage/orator
- ninja/monk
- mediator/chemist
- black mage/arithmetician

the "reward" for grinding these out is very worth it, and very cool to witness.

in a collecting game, grinding is expected
Bravely Default. The grinding is pretty insane even hough they give you a fast forward button.

Then halfway through the game you end up having to revisit every area and basically replay the whole game again but in a boss rush sort of mode where each time the paired bosses are different.
I have barely ever played a JRPG that is "grindy", because aside from like some games released in the late 80s or early 90s, grinding has always been something players do when they're unable to beat battles at the intended difficulty, or they run into a wall after running from all combat for a while

i feel ya. amount of grinding in that game is ridiculous. spent countless hours on leveling up jobs

i play jrpgs mainly for stories so when they require me to do extra work, it turns me off. many jrpg i have known were designed to be unbeatable without some grinding. expecially in later stage or bosses
In the past 5 years probably octopath traveller.
Not really need to grind but to reach max level would take a lot of grinding.
It was further back than 5 years, but the Final Fantasy 4 3d remake required plenty of grinding for Adamant Armors and Onion Swords and gold and silver apples before you're ready to take on Proto-Babil.

The Pixel Remasters are such a disappointment, cutting the challenge dungeons and superbosses.
This one was really bad https://store.steampowered.com/app/237890/Agarest_Generations_of_War/

Not only is it really long, but it expects you to beat it multi times. And you need a guide to get the "true" ending. Game even comes with an autobattle...

Newer than that...., I just don't play jrpgs anymore

the FF3 remake also was pretty grindy, but that was more out of difficulty. i actually adored how bizarrely difficult that version was, i wish more FF games would strive to be this.
FF9 feels grindy, mostly because the loading screen for every battle is quite long

Crazy to think characters can actually die in that game. By die I mean if you lose them in a certain map they’re gone forever.
