(Steam Chat Post) SCP-610 The post that baits.
Item #: SCP-610
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures:
Foundation web crawlers are to continuously monitor Steam forums, particularly Off Topic, for instances of SCP-610. Any posts identified as SCP-610 are to be flagged and scrubbed via Protocol-9F “Thread Lock.” Affected users (hereafter referred to as SCP-610-1) are to be monitored for no less than 72 hours following initial exposure.
Embedded operatives in major tech companies are to maintain influence over content moderation systems to prevent the organic spread of SCP-610. Instances must not be allowed to reach trending status or recommendation algorithms.
Description:
SCP-610 refers to a series of cognitohazardous text posts appearing primarily on the Steam Community Off Topic Forums. The posts often appear innocuous or poorly worded at first glance, usually containing inflammatory or contrarian opinions or AI generated essays such as:
“Why Dark Souls is actually too easy if you're not bad.”
“Baldur’s Gate 3 is just Dragon Age 2 with better lighting.”
“MAGA this. Liberal that.”
Upon reading SCP-610, approximately 74% of users report an immediate, irrational compulsion to respond aggressively, regardless of their prior temperament. This compulsion grows in intensity the longer the individual remains exposed to the thread, often resulting in prolonged argument chains, harassment, and in extreme cases, doxxing or real-world violence.
Subjects affected by SCP-610 (designated SCP-610-1) enter a state of cognitive hyperfixation, compulsively refreshing the page, responding to replies, and monitoring post metrics. EEG readings of SCP-610-1 subjects show brain activity consistent with mild seizures and high dopamine spikes typically associated with addictive behavior.
Posts affected by SCP-610 cannot be traced to any user account. Metadata shows anomalous creation times (e.g., timestamps listed as “404:TIME NOT FOUND”) and IP addresses that resolve to blank coordinates or obsolete 4chan or Reddit servers.
Recovery Log 610-A:
On ██/██/2023, an SCP-610 instance titled “Proof that Half-Life 3 was overrated from the start” reached Steam’s front page for 7 minutes before containment protocols were enacted. In that time, over 40,000 users engaged with the thread. Two moderators suffered psychological breakdowns. One user reportedly drove across state lines to “debate in person.” They were detained and are now in Foundation custody.
Addendum 610-B:
Efforts to use SCP-610 as a memetic counter-agent against hostile infohazards have been unsuccessful. Subjects exposed to both SCP-610 and SCP-████ simultaneously became comatose or attempted to livestream themselves reading the post aloud with commentary, resulting in cognitive meltdown in 87% of viewers.
Note from Dr. Gaben:
"We originally thought SCP-610 was a meme. Just another cursed internet thread. But after Subject 882 bit through a laptop screen trying to 'ratio someone into the void,' we realized it’s not about the content — it's about the engagement. Whatever SCP-610 is, it doesn’t want you to agree or disagree. It just wants your attention."
